Job Description Summary:

This role exists within the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department. Associate will assist Licensed Genetic Counselors with direct and indirect patient care on the unit while also supporting the genetic testing processes of the department. The Genetic Counseling – Clinical Extender will play a vital role in collaborating with all interdisciplinary departmental staff. Assists with a variety of administrative and clinical tasks using scientific knowledge in biology and genetics. Tasks would include but are not limited to reviewing and obtaining medical records, collecting, and processing personal and family medical histories, preparing test kits and requisitions, packaging lab specimens, communicating with genetic testing laboratories about patient samples, tracking genetic tests and results, identifying patient resources for genetic diseases, obtain patient cost estimates and prior authorizations for testing. Under the supervision of the Licensed Genetic Counselor, the Clinical Extender will communicate results to the patient with clear documentation in the EMR. The Clinical Extender may attend and participate in hospital or system-wide meetings to aid in coordination of care. The Clinical Extender may also assist with projects throughout the department or assist with taking vitals and rooming patients.

Responsibilities And Duties:

60% Clinical Responsibilities
Performs various patient related duties in support of the Licensed Genetic Counselor.
Collects and processes pre-appointment medical and family history data from patients, the EMR, and outside records.
Works with patients and providers to obtain pertinent records from external sources.
Responsible for compiling data collected for use by Genetic Counselors during patient sessions.
May provide results to patients with supervision from the Genetic Counselor. 
May assist with vitals and rooming of patients.

30% Communication
Handles routine correspondence such as post appointment mailings, schedules appointments, and acts as a liaison and resource person for patients and outside reference laboratories; responds to information requests.

10% Project work
Assists with the gathering of information and supports Genetic Counselors in responding to requests related to department projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree: Life Sciences

Additional Job Description:

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

  • Background in life sciences with focus on genetics. 
  • Basic understanding of inheritance patterns, chromosomes, genes, genetic variant nomenclature, and the metric system. 
  • Vitals training and BLS certification preferred.
