Basic Job Functions:
Nucor Steel West Virginia is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic that will be a great Nucor team member who demonstrates high levels of honesty, integrity, and ownership in everything they do. In addition, the selected candidates will ensure the success of the team by SAFELY performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems and equipment within the hot mill area. This role ensures maximum equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and safety while supporting continuous improvement efforts across the mill. As well as proposing and implementing innovative solutions to challenges in the steel making process. The Maintenance Mechanic will work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
Nucor Steel West Virginia's greenfield project is a new state-of-the-art sheet steel mill that will produce up to 3 million tons per year once fully operational. This advanced manufacturing facility is to be located in Mason County, along the Ohio River in close proximity to both Huntington and Charleston, WV.
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
• Perform mechanical maintenance and repairs on equipment such as roller tables, gearboxes, descalers, coilers, shears, hydraulic systems, and other critical hot mill systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical failures and implement effective solutions with minimal downtime.
• Conduct daily inspections and complete work orders and documentation with accuracy.
• Execute preventative and predictive maintenance tasks per schedule.
• Assist with equipment installations, rebuilds, and overhauls.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Participate in pre-job planning, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement activities.
• Collaborate closely with operations, electrical, and engineering teams to maintain optimal mill performance.
• Utilize CMMS systems to record maintenance activities, parts used, and equipment history.
• Uphold and promote all safety policies, including PPE compliance, lockout/tagout procedures, and stop work authority.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Minimum of 2 years mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency with mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, drive systems, and alignment techniques
• Basic understanding of welding, cutting, and rigging.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
• Ability to work safely in a physically demanding environment (lifting, climbing, standing for long periods).
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior Steel Mill experience.
- Technical certificate or associate degree in mechanical maintenance, industrial technology, or related field.
- Proficiency using CMMS for maintenance tracking
