Strait Regional Centre for Education

As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success.  The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.”  In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations.  Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 8 hours/day (12 month)

Janitor

 

Responsibilities:                                            

 

  • Clean, on a daily basis, all assigned areas of the school in accordance with established practices and standards;
  • Obtain and maintain sufficient supplies on hand to carry out duties and responsibilities;
  • Report any breakdowns, accidents, damage or vandalism to the appropriate supervisor;
  • Secure all doors and windows whenever the building is vacated and activate security system if last person to vacate building;
  • Perform floor care duties, such as stripping, sealing, waxing, burnishing, etc.;
  • Perform snow and ice control duties as needed;                                                       
  • Pick up litter and trash from yards, driveways, parking lots and walkways on an ongoing basis with general clean-ups;
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and SRCE policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
  • Arm and unarm the building security system ;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Experience and training in commercial cleaning methods and procedures, general repair and grounds keeping;
  • Ability to peform all the duties of this position;
  • Current WHMIS certification;
  • Current First Aid Certification;
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both the written and oral form;
  • Willingness to work as part of the school support team;
  • Ability to arm and disarm the building security system in an unsupervised setting.
