The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Early Literacy Support Teacher will work with classroom teachers and school-based administrators to improve student achievement; the major focus will be on delivering Halifax Learning P-2 Structured Literacy Program iat the grade P-2 level and following the DEECD provincial early intervention framework. Other duties will include supporting literacy at all levels: Tier 1, 2 and 3 as deemed necessary by admin/TST/ regional literacy team.

Depending on qualifications and prior training, successful candidates may be required to take additional training as required for this position.

The Early Literacy Support Teacher is expected to:

  • Provide small group instruction to students who are screened that will require foundational early literacy support. 
  • Work in/out of classrooms with students to support literacy development and achievement of students.
  • Maintain and submit records as outlined by the TCRCE Literacy staff (biweekly).
  • Experience with structured literacy initiatives considered an asset.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills
  • Utilize effective data-based problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrate effective collaboration skills
  • Use effective strategies for differentiating instruction
  • Exhibit knowledge of outcomes-based curriculum
  • Experience as a Learning Support teacher;
  • Experience transitioning students;
  • Experience working at the Elementary level;
  • Experience working as a member of a program planning team;
  • Experience working  closely with Teacher Assistants to ensure appropriate educational programming for individual students that supports independence;
  • Training in working with students who require academic, behavioral and/or social emotional support, including life skills.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate students’ literacy needs and collaborate with teachers and administrators to interpret, use assessment data to improve instruction, and create instructional plans for students based on needs. 
  • Use a range of assessment tools as a means to make sound decisions, through collaboration with school teams, about student literacy needs as related to the curriculum and instruction. 
  • Analyze formal and informal student assessment data to determine next steps in instruction
  • Plan, sequence, and scaffold instruction based on high leverage instructional practices
  • Provide resource support to students identified through the program planning process who may require an alternate school setting;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and board policies related to student services;
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co-teaching, learning centre);
  • Implement strategies, activities, and techniques for promoting student learning based on each student’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
  • MEd. In Special Education; MEd in Inclusive Education; or Diploma in Special Education preferred
  • Bachelor of education in elementary
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
  • Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction;
  • Experience with Guided Reading/Small-group Instruction
  • Early Literacy Support/Reading Recovery training would be an asset
