About this role

Job Summary

Serves as the content nutrition expert and lead for the clinical nutrition team. Collaborates with the healthcare team to provide patient centered care. Provides complex medical nutrition therapy, is the knowledge expert in area of practice, assists clinical nutrition manager with supervisory duties as assigned (i.e. schedules, daily tasks, huddles, meetings, oversee formula room, internship coordination), leads interdepartmental committees, participates in multidisciplinary rounds, guides practice of RD I, RD II, RD III, and precepts fellows, medical residents, dietetic students as applicable.

Job Specific Duties

  • Utilizes the Nutrition Care Process to perform nutritional assessments, reassessments while using age-appropriate standards and validated assessment tools. Includes nutrition related diagnosis when needed using the eNCP terminology approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). Develops individualized intervention plans which include appropriate feeding route, mode and nutrition interventions. Monitors and evaluates Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) plan of care using specific goals and determines change in indicated. 
  • Responds to consults and nutrition screens and arranges follow ups within appropriate established time frames based on department policy and patient condition.
  • Coordinates patient's plan of care. Participates in interdisciplinary meetings; proactively identifies patient with nutritional needs during rounds and discharge meetings. 
  • Communicates with medical team regarding nutrition interventions.
  • Documents assessments, reassessments, and updates within the Electronic Health Record, utilizing department specific Power Forms and IPOCs. 
  • Monitors use of formulary & non-formulary formulas and communicates with the formula room to coordinate provision of service. 
  • Provides nutritional education to patients & families within the specific scope of practice, while taking into consideration patient’s preferred learning styles/readiness for change/cultural beliefs.
  • Organizes and conducts education/in-services for department staff, nursing units, physicians and other ancillary staff members.
  • Participates in facility-wide and department program on performance improvement to improve processes and patient care.
  • Develops and modifies education materials for patients and family to meet their learning needs. 
  • Communicates nutrition plans of care with medical team members, patients and families through verbal, written or electronic communication. 
  • Serves as preceptor for dietetic interns and medical residents as assigned. Provides feedback for evaluation of interns/residents and feedback for improvement in dietetic intern program as needed.
  • Successfully completes application (initial and renewal every 2 years) for RD IV as per Registered Dietitian Clinical Ladder Program. 
  • May support formula room functions to support daily operations.  
  • Covers for both Clinical Nutrition Manager and cross-covers for other inpatient areas.  


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree if RDN obtained prior to 1/1/2024 (OR) Master's degree after 1/1/2024  
  • RD - Registered Dietitian Nutritionist by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • LDN - Licensed Dietitian/Nutrition or approved application from the Department of Professional Regulation of Florida required within 6 months of hire date
  • American Heart Association AED required within 6 months of hire date - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment 
  • Advanced Practice Certification - must hold two Specialty Board Certifications from CDR or other Nutrition Society with one of the advanced practice credentials being within pediatrics (CSP or CCSP).
  • Level II Background Check - Fingerprints background must be initiated within 15 days of hire date and finalized within 90 days of hire date
  • 10 years of clinical nutrition experience as an RDN
  • 6 years of clinical nutrition experience as an RDN in pediatrics

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families and co-workers
  • Able to communicate consistently and effectively (understand, read, write, and speak) in English
  • Able to communicate consistently and effectively (understand, read, write, and speak) in Spanish preferred
  • Able to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Knowledge of how to perform algebra computations and conversions in order to make nutritional recommendations
  • Able to interpret, evaluate, and utilize research results
