Position Specific Description
NextEra Energy is seeking an experienced attorney to support the trading and origination group within NextEra Energy’s General Counsel Business Unit. This role will dedicate 100% of its time to supporting NextEra Energy Marketing’s wholesale and retail natural gas trading and origination business.
While NextEra Energy is headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida, this position will be based in NextEra Energy Marketing’s Houston, Texas office.
This position involves a high level of responsibility and frequent interaction with company management. Responsibilities include drafting and negotiating contracts for sophisticated commercial transactions, with a primary focus on wholesale and retail natural gas transactions, as well as complex structured financial transactions. The successful candidate will have experience with structured physical and financial fuel and power transactions, renewable energy transactions, and trading agreements, including ISDA, NAESB, and bespoke commodity agreements.
Applicants should have a strong academic background and a minimum of five years of experience in a corporate legal department, law firm, or financial institution.
Position Requirements
Five or more years of experience as a commercial attorney at a leading energy company, law firm, or financial institution
Strong preference for candidates with significant energy transactional experience; ideal candidates will have experience with natural gas transactions, asset management agreements, and pipeline transportation and storage agreements
Experience with mass market and retail transactions
Familiarity with FERC and applicable state regulations governing wholesale and retail natural gas transactions
Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating physical and financial commodity contracts, including originated and structured fuel transactions
Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating ISDA and NAESB master agreements
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients at all levels of the organization, including senior management, and to serve as a trusted business advisor
Sound judgment and the ability to work independently and efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment, with strong attention to detail
Strong work ethic; proactive, flexible, and enthusiastic approach; and a high level of business and personal integrity
Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including strong negotiation and interpersonal skills
Excellent academic credentials
Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar
