Role Expectations & Summary:

Our Individuals at our Nelson Group Home are looking for a Community Support Worker professional. This group home resides in Northwest area of Calgary. On this team, you will be supporting a variety of Individuals will complex behaviors and disabilities. Your expectation will be to motivate our Individuals to be independent and have a valued role in the community. 

Individuals you support may have diagnoses such as FASD, Borderline Personality, ADHS, Addiction, Complex Trauma, Schizophrenia, A.D.H.D, Mood Disorders, and other developmental disabilities. You will follow the individualized support plans for each individual to help them work towards and achieve their goals. The Individuals you work with may require personal care, g-tube feedings, for you to drive and accompany them to medical appointments, or other assistance in their daily activities.

 

With a passion for supporting people with disabilities, you will… 

  • Provide medical, technological, environmental, emotional, physical, and behavioural support 
  • Attend medical/legal appointments with the Individuals
  • Administer daily documentation, medication of the Individual, and key worker duties
  • Assist Individuals in their daily chores and activities within the community or in the group home
  • Support safety and cleanliness of the Individual's living space
  • Complete tasks such fire drills//hazard assessments
  • Communicate with OPG/Guardians/Family Member
  • Collaborate, advocate & research for the support Individual if necessary such as hospitals if required
  • Specific support to the Individuals on an ODP (Opioid Dependency Program) or O.A.T
  • Drive to meet Individuals, or be able to transport them to activities or appointments throughout the day
  • Learn the behavioural support plans to better understand Individual needs and requirements.
  • Effectively complete required incident reports

 

About you: 

You are someone who is dedicated to learning and researching about ongoing behaviors or concerns of the Individuals. As this group home facility is heavy on Individuals with trauma and addiction, you have previous work or learning experience in Harm Reduction Philosophy& Trauma Informed Care Practices,. You have an adequate knowledge about current mental health and addiction concerns and behaviors. You have previous experience or knowledge regarding bio hazards or illicit substances use. You are willing take training on Universal Precaution or Infection Prevention & Control and support the Individuals using PPE. You are ready to work in an environment that promotes the safe disposal of used needles or drug paraphernalia. You are willing to understand and learn the Individual's trauma history and collaborate with your team to come up with strategies to support them. You have excellent leadership skills and qualities, where you are not afraid to step-up in a crisis situation. You are someone who brings an adaptive, strong, and bold personality, as there will be Individuals who have verbally and physically aggression tendencies.

 

Schedule & Benefits: 

This is Permanent position offering 24 hours per week. The schedule is Saturday, Sunday, Monday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Since driving is required for this position, we reimburse mileage at $0.50/km. The starting pay rate for this position is $21.19 per hour. This role includes 4%vacation pay plus an additional 6 flex days per year after the first 3 months of employment. All regular staff are eligible to pick up additional casual hours at any of our locations outside of their scheduled hours. 

 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Minimum of a Canadian Certificate/Diploma in the Human Services or Disability sector (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Intermediate computer skills and MS Office proficiency
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle, with minimum $2,000,000 liability insurance by time of hire
  • Comfortable supporting Individuals with diverse disabilities and complex diagnoses

 

Preferred Requirements: 

  • One-year relevant experience in the human services field and/or prior experience in a fast-paced day program/outreach is preferred
  • Previous experience with trauma, addiction, harm reduction and substance use
  • Previous work experience in a group home would be an asset
  • Having a medical background - whether professional or academic
  • Current trainings including First Aid/CPR, Medication Administration, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Abuse Prevention Response Protocol, Positive Behaviour Supports, etc.
