Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for the role of Compliance & Policy Officer.

The Compliance & Policy Management Officer is a key member of the Administration and Finance team, responsible for ensuring institutional adherence to federal, state, and NSHE regulations governing healthcare, research, and academic operations. This position oversees compliance programs related to HIPAA, Conflicts of Interest (COI), Compensated Outside Activities (COA), and policy governance, while fostering a culture of integrity and accountability across all departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor compliance programs for HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, including PHI protection and breach response.
  • Oversee COI disclosures and COA requests from UNR Med employees per NSHE and institutional policies; maintain accurate records and ensure timely reporting.
  • Conduct internal audits and risk assessments; implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update institutional policies to align with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards (LCME), and university governance.
  • Chair the Policy Committee and coordinate writing, auditing, and approval of institutional policies.
  • Design and deliver compliance training programs for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Prepare compliance reports for senior leadership and regulatory agencies.
  • Investigate compliance violations and collaborate with Legal and HR for resolution.
  • Serve as primary contact for compliance inquiries and provide guidance on regulatory interpretation.
  • Collaborate with other compliance units on campus and at affiliated partners

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and policy development skills; the ability to manage confidential information independently and ethically; and the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of departments and stakeholders. Adaptability, attention to detail, problem-solving and consensus building are key to success in the role.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and five years of related professional work experience OR

Master’s Degree and two years of related professional work experience

Related Experience: compliance in a healthcare, research or education setting with demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA, COI, COA, and/or policy governance .

Required Licensure or Certification: HIPAA Privacy Officer Certification or other demonstrated training or experience with HIPAA

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in healthcare administration, law, or related field; Master’s level preferred

Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or equivalent

$68,646 - $85,808 - $102,970
