About this role

We’re looking for a protection and control engineer who has a background in developing products and solutions to support variable scale high priority projects and respond to faults to ensure the Transmission System remains resilient across England and Wales.

 

As the Lead Transmission Network Engineer, you will lead the design, delivery, and recovery process for light current solutions, including fault response and incident investigations. You will ensure that, within the area of engineering expertise, the business has optimal scope definition and solutions for each individual project or incident investigation. Additionally, you will ensure that the highest standards of Safety, Quality, Sustainability, Environmental considerations, and Resilience are applied in the process of maintaining high power system reliability.

 

Your contributions will also be vital in assisting with the annual Asset Health Review, ensuring the reliability and performance of our critical infrastructure. This role requires national travel across England and Wales.

 

This role is based out of one of our National Grid offices, and we’d hope to see you at least two days per week but you’re welcome to be in the office more often if that would work best for you. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!

What You'll Do

  • Discharge the role of ‘Designer’ where appropriate by providing the ‘NG Principal Designer’ with sufficient information for design approval. To provide expert engineering support in own field of expertise, to ensure cost effective and appropriate option selection for project detailed design and delivery, including coordination and resolution of technical issues from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop standard solutions for asset interventions of protection and control assets, including meeting Type Registration deliverables.
  • Discharge the role of Designer by providing the design, or by checking the design supplied by a Transmission Network Engineer on a risk-based approach, for creating protection and control solutions for in-service failures of obsolete equipment.
  • Provide obsolescence/commissioning advice and on-site fault response as appropriate to either Asset Lifecycle or Occupiers representatives for existing assets and to support in-house created designs.
  • Lead and deliver Factory Acceptance Testing for in-house developed light current solutions.
  • Working towards NG ETBP-141 authorisation to enable the ability to discharge the role of Assurance Engineer as and when required by the Network Engineering Manager.
  • Provide oversight, challenge, mentoring and advice to both Transmission Network Engineers & Associate Transmission Network Engineers as assigned by the Network Engineering Manager and support them in delivering their accountabilities and objectives.
  • Provide training to operational field staff as and when required on in-house developed solutions and support them in delivering their accountabilities.
  • Provide technical input and advice, to the wider business by providing 1st and 2nd line technical support on protection and control assets where required by the Network Engineering Manager.
  • Author, develop, advise on, implement and maintain Engineering Documents as appropriate.

What You'll Have

  • Significant experience in the programming and solution development of light current protection assets from at least 2 different manufacturers.
  • A knowledge of design, extension and lifetime management of UK protection and control assets from the 1960s to the present day.
  • Good understanding of National Grid Policy and Procedure.
  • Detailed knowledge of light current manufacturer relay interrogation software.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and knowledge of successful project delivery.
  • Experienced in effective communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to multi-disciplined teams / audiences.
  • Experienced in building and maintain relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders.
