The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 18-month contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Department.
Project Title: Using Artificial Intelligence to Examine Mediational Factors in STEM Makerspaces
Project Introduction:
The Natural Sciences and Science Education Department of NIE is hiring one Research Assistant (full-time) to support a study that seeks to establish empirical knowledge about how changes in makerspace may catalyse, propagate, and/or hinder social interactions and interactions with artefacts. The long-term aim of this work is to develop a framework focusing on mediational factors and learning outcomes in makerspace. This evidence-based framework may then be used by makerspace owners and staff, such as teachers in charge of makerspace, to purposefully design meaningful and productive learning experiences for participants instead of allowing random events to unfold. The period of the contract will be 18 months, and the Research Assistant is expected to participate in all activities related to science education and research led by the Principal Investigator.
Requirements:
Essential
- A Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, Engineering or Social Sciences
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Good analytical and critical thinking skills
- Good organizational skills, demonstrate initiative to plan and anticipate work needed to be done
- Good communication skills, including the ability liaise with external parties
- Demonstrate positive work attitude and strong work ethics
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision within tight deadlines
Preferred
- Working experience as Research Assistant in education projects
- Has published in reputable academic/scholarly journals
- Background in technology and ability to code in Python
- Ability to write academic papers
Responsibilities:
- Liaison with school and MOE partners
- Organisation of meetings
- Coordinating with other team members
- Conduct literature reviews
- Assist in development of data collection pipeline in makerspaces
- Support participant screening, recruitment, and scheduling
- Data collection and analysis
- Transcribe qualitative data
- Organise and manage research materials, equipment, documentation and ethical records
- Support logistics and contribute to reporting, presentations, and dissemination activities
- Publication and report writing
- All other project administration (including IRB application, purchase of research equipment and submission of grant reports, etc.)
- Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
