About this role

Overview

The Specimen Processor II prepares and handles specimen samples received for testing. Matches patient information, enters data into lab information systems, and scans documents received into databases. Works with management and quality team members to ensure laboratory activities are defined, documented, and completed to support inspection readiness. Ensures compliance is maintained through procedures, training, and documentation.

Responsibility

  1. Prepare and handle specimen samples for testing.
    1. Use an accessioning application to assign specimens an internal tracking number.
    2. Compare the patients name and other identifiers on the test request form and verify the information on the specimen matches.
    3. Ensure specimens are labeled appropriately.
    4. Communicate any important information pertaining to testing.
    5. Look for and document problems with specimens.
    6. Scan paperwork submitted with specimens.
  2. Participate in the processing of proficiency testing as needed.
  3. Comply with and maintain competency in all laboratory policies and procedures associated to accessioning.
  4. Observe all compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly those associated to data security and patient confidentiality.
  5. Actively participate in and maintain accepted laboratory standards for continuing education.
  6. Maintain ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with co-workers and other staff.
  7. Work with team members to resolve department problems and help implement improvement projects.

    Shift: 9:30am - 2:30pm PT

Qualifications

  1. Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Chemical, Physical or Biological Science or equivalent with 1 plus years of clinical laboratory experience; or
  2. High school diploma or GED equivalent with 2 plus years of clinical laboratory experience.
  3. Detail oriented with the ability to multitask.
  4. Data entry experience preferred.
  5. Dedication to regular attendance.

Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements – medium work or exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force consistently. Physical Requirements – stationary positioning, moving, operating, ascending/descending, communicating, observing, reaching, and repetitive motion. Use of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential job functions. Hazards and Atmospheric Conditions – exposure to fumes, dust, extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid, noise, vibration, mists or gases, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and radiant energy hazards. OSHA Category I – duties performed routinely requires exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.
