Summary

Under the supervision of the Recreational Therapist and/or Licensed Nursing Staff, the Resident Assistant performs customer service duties and assists in maintaining a positive physical, social, and psychological environment for the residents while promoting resident comfort. The purpose of this position is to offer extended customer service while enhancing the residents rehabilitative or long-term-care experience.


Responsibilities

 

A Day in the Life of a LTC Resident Assistant at MyMichigan Health:

(40%) Dining and nutrition assistance.

(20%) Resident call lights and customer service.

(30%) Recreational Activities.

(10%) Stocking supplies.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adheres to the abuse prevention program policies and procedures.
  • Does not feed residents unless they have completed the 8-hour feeding assistant course as outlines by the State of Michigan.
  • Does not provide direct care is not a certified nursing assistant.
  • Seeks proper assist for duties requiring direct care or licensed nurse or therapist qualification.
  • Comes to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality.
  • Consistently works cooperatively with residents, residents’ representatives, facility staff and ancillary service providers.
  • Participates in department education as directed.
  • MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures

Credential: TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt
Equivalent Experience: Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification).


Required Education

Requirements We Are Looking For:

Education: High School Diploma or GED
Equivalent Experience: 

Comment: High School Diploma or GED or proof of status in collegiate course with health care related field. Encouraged to enroll in a certified nursing assistant program within 12 months from date of hire or transfer.

  • Attends meetings/in-services as required. An employee may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and the ability to speak, write, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to relate with all ages and individuals with different cultural and spiritual backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with patients and families who are dealing with terminal illness, the dying process and death.
  • Available to work weekends, be on-call as scheduled, and have flexibility in work schedule.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level:
  • Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
