About this role

Summary

Primary duties of this position include: installs, inspects, operates, and repairs refrigeration equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water, medical care, and heating, ventilating and air conditioning of the Medical Center facilities.
Responsibilities

(20%) Inspects and operates refrigerating machinery, coolers, and freezer units to determine that all are functioning properly. Adjusts and regulates refrigerant and other flow to maintain desired system operations.

 

(20%) Maintains and repairs systems, listens to operation to detect malfunctioning. Traces electrical control system and makes corrections. Tests operation, re-solders, repacks, replaces, dismantles, and lubricates.

 

(20%) Installs, mounts, bores holes, cuts, bends, joins, solders, connects, and tests refrigeration systems in accordance with blueprints and manufacturer specifications. Performs all functions necessary to maintain operations of the HVAC systems utilizing microprocessors, digital controller, high-speed network, software and/or other state-of-the-art systems.

 

(20%) Performs minor carpentry, plastering and painting in connection with refrigeration work.

 

(20%)* Maintains records and estimates quantities of materials needed and prepares requisitions.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructs and helps less experienced maintenance personnel as required and/or directed.

 

Copes with and handles discrepancies and variations from regular system or procedure, which may occasionally arise.

 

Works alone or with more experienced maintenance personnel.

 

Lends aid to all maintenance crafts including, but not limited to, snow/ice removal and grounds maintenance in times when other maintenance operations may be unusually heavy.

 

Must be familiar and comply with all governing agencies, i.e., JCAHO, MIOSHA, Michigan Department of Community Health, Fire Marshal, codes, regulations and procedures pertaining to the overall maintenance operation such as refrigeration, building, electricity, powerhouse, fire, and safety.

 

Performs other duties as required.

Certifications and Licensures

EPA - Environmental Protection Agenc Required Equivalent Experience - Certification is required in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency 40CFR, Part 82, Subpart F.

 


Required Education

Education: High School Diploma or GED

 

Comments: Knowledge of blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, physics, shop courses, refrigeration, and HVAC components and systems acquired through at least 4 years’ experience, directly in the HVACR trade OR an Associate’s degree in Applied Science – HVACR Technology. Any current Skills Trades Refrigeration employee hired before 9/6/17 will be grandfathered and would not need the required education.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Knowledge of reading, writing, mathematical and computer skills as normally acquired through completion of high school.

 

Knowledge of blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, physics, shop courses, refrigeration, and HVAC components and systems normally acquired through experience, trade, or vocational school and/or established training program.

 

Ability to test, operate, and repair mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and HVAC equipment and systems.

 

Ability to interpret prints, schematics, specifications, and codes.

 

Ability to work indoors or outdoors in all kinds of weather.

 

Job requires a regard for and significant adherence to quality workmanship.

 

Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be completed as required.

 

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

 

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

 

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

 

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

 

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

 

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

 

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

 

Physical Demand Level: Medium.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
