About this role

Summary

This position is responsible for ensuring that all patients, visitors, physicians, other department employees and vendors receive superior customer service. It is responsible for welcoming and correctly registering patients for outpatient procedures, admissions, pre-admissions, same day surgeries, observations, lab drop-offs, and assisting physician offices as necessary. Admitting is also responsible for answering telephone calls from other departments, directing patients, putting correct paperwork together for patients’ charts, ensuring that the correct paperwork goes to the correct department, POS collections and scanning documents.


Responsibilities

(20%) Welcomes and correctly register patients.

 

(20%)  Direct patients and visitors to the correct locations.

 

(20%)  Collects patient demographics to complete a registration accurately including documentation of MSP information for Medicare patients. Uses available tools to verify patient identify.

 

(20%)  Gather all necessary insurance information including copies of insurance cards when needed.

 

(20%)*  Promptly and courteously answer telephone, transferring calls appropriately, and returning messages when needed.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Obtain MSP information to 100% compliance.

 

Accesses insurance eligibility websites including Cerner’s EEM Electronic Eligibility product to verify benefits and coverage.

 

Able to assess co-pay and deductible amounts.

 

Obtain necessary signatures of consent for treatment, Advanced Beneficiary Notices, Notice of Non-Coverage, and Important Message from Medicare.

 

Verify and obtain signatures for Medicare lab patients through ABN Assistant Software.

 

Promptly register scheduled patients for different departments.

 

Regularly inventory and order supplies when needed.

 

Scan consents, physician orders and other appropriate documentation in Cerner.

 

Completes Point of Service collections, posts payments and completes appropriate reconciliation.

 

Applies necessary medical terminology skills and the ability to read and interpret clinical documentation such as physician orders.

 

Staff cross train and are available to cover Outpatient Registration, Inpatient Registration, Emergency Room Registration and Switchboard Operator functions.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS: 

Must have good organizational and interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with patients and coworkers.

 

Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) certification preferred.

  

One year experience working with insurance, registration and collections preferred.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.  Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.  May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Sedentary.  Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
