POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of a licensed physician or a physician assistant or nurse practitioner (with physician’s written instructions), the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides medical support to the medical providers and front office staff. The CMA performs patient oriented procedure, is responsible for providing patient care with a positive, caring, professional attitude working closely with other staff members to ensure quality care and a positive patient experience.

This position description is intended to identify some of the duties and responsibilities of this position. MODOC MEDICAL CENTER reserves the right to modify, supplement, delete or augment the duties and responsibilities specified in this position description, MODOC MEDICAL CENTER’S sole and absolute discretion.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:      

General Competencies:

  1. Demonstrates professional behavior and a positive working relationship with clients, visitors and facility staff. Deals tactfully with all types of individuals.

  5. Produces deliverable products on time, within budget with minimal direction.
  6. Preforms all assigned tasks accurately. Maintains an organized set of records, delivers records immediately upon request, or the functions that are preformed within the scope of the job.  
  7. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and prioritize to maintain optimum clinic back office flow maintaining patient confidentiality.
  8. Must be flexible to meet the needs of patients, providers and co-workers.
  9. Must maintain confidentiality relating to all MMC Patients, including personnel.

Specific Competencies:

  1. Attends staff meetings.
  2. Uses universal precautions.
  3. Utilizes facility procedure manuals or reference materials as appropriate.
  4. Escorts patients to exam rooms: assist and/or chaperones all patients as appropriate. 
  5. Obtains patient vital signs with accurate readings: temperature, pulse, respiration, O2 saturation, blood pressure, height and weight with proper documentation.
  6. Reviews patient electronic charts for completeness, ensuring all relevant information for the visit is filed (i.e. lab, X-ray, consultation reports, etc.).
  7. Plots required information on Growth Charts for pediatric patients.
  8. Collects and processes specimens accurately with proper completion of lab requisitions.
  9. Assembles and arranges equipment and instruments required for exams and procedures.
  10. Assists and/or chaperones the provider with procedures as appropriate.
  11. Administers and documents injections per provider order.  Proficiently performs venipuncture.
  12. Performs Vision Screenings (near and far) and Audiometric Screenings accurately.
  13. Hooks up Holter Monitors and King of Hearts Monitors when needed.
  14. Preforms spirometry services when needed.
  15. Uses correct lead placement for EKGs and inputs correct patient information.
  16. Demonstrates proficient knowledge of sterile technique and sterile field (Autoclave and sterilize instruments/equipment per protocols).
  17. Maintains Autoclave machine to include cleaning and QC as needed.
  18. Prepares and stocks rooms daily. Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are in each exam room. Discards outdates as appropriate. 
  19. Understands clinic programs offered such as CHDP, FPACT.
  20. Completes pharmacy and supplies ordered weekly.
  21. Coordinates all vaccines to include entering them into CAIR and also placing orders of vaccines for VFC and private stock.
  22. Obtains prior authorization requests for medication coverage when asked to do so by providers.
  23. Cross-trains to the front office to fill in as needed.
  24. Recognizes emergency situations and appropriate action is instituted.
  25. Readily locates and operates all emergency equipment (i.e., oxygen, emergency drug box and fire extinguisher, etc.).
  26. Checks inter-facility email on a regular basis for communications from management and other staff.
  27. Maintains accountability that includes efficient use of time and materials.
  28. Demonstrates patient advocacy that ensures patients’ rights of privacy, safety and confidentiality.
  29. Serves as preceptor for new staff as necessary.
  30. Performs other duties as assigned.  

Professional Requirements:

  1. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and professional.
  2. Completes annual education requirements, if applicable.
  3. Maintains regulatory requirements.
  4. Wears identification badge while on duty.
  5. Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process.
  6. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.
  7. Attends all meetings as appropriate.
  8. Exhibits the mission, ethics and goals of Modoc Medical Center in the performance of job duties. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Exposure to bodily fluids; exposure to infectious disease; exposure to emotional crisis of others.
  2. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, multitask and prioritize to maintain optimum clinic flow.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Frequent standing and walking, lifting and moving objects up to 25 pounds, positioning patients.
  2. Repetitive motion (hands/arms).
  3. Able to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.  

Qualifications


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Certified Medical Assistant certificate required.
  3. Current CPR certification.
  4. Able to perform or learn phlebotomy procedures.
  5. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  6. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment, multitask and prioritize to maintain optimum clinic flow.
  7. Flexible in order to meet the demands of patients, providers and co-workers.
  8. Ability to deal with people in a pleasant and courteous manner, even under stressful conditions.
  9. Maintain confidentiality relating to MMC personnel and patient information that could result in proprietary damage to MMC.
