Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)     

 

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full-time, temporary Summer Human Resources Assistant. This is a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Summer Human Resources Assistant will support the Human Resources department in areas including administration, personnel records management, recruitment, and onboarding. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist with talent acquisition needs, such as creating job postings and interview guides, posting job advertisements, participating in interviews and completing background checks.
  • Attend career fairs and develop professional relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Help maintain accurate, up-to-date, and complete personnel records.
  • Support with onboarding which may include assisting with employee engagement activities, supporting HR orientation, and completing checklist items.
  • Draft employment related documents such as offer letters, employment verifications, and job descriptions.
  • Assist with processing employee changes and offboarding processes.
  • Conduct research on legislation and best practices to support informed decision making within the Human Resources department.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.



Skills & Competencies 

We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about supporting Indigenous communities and human resources practices. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include: 

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette. 
  • Some knowledge of employment legislation, and the ability to research and interpret legislation. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications, Adobe, and Google Workspace. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. 
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills. 
  • Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong planning, organization, and prioritization. 
  • Political and cultural sensitivity. 
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.  

 

Qualifications  

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field is required. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.  
  • 1-2 years of experience in Human Resources is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid. 
  • Customer Service or Administrative experience is an asset. 

 

Other Requirements 

  • Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.  
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.  
  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement. 
  • Reliable transportation is required.

About MNA

In 1928, Alberta Métis began organizing to advance Métis self-determination and self-government in the province, leading to the creation of the Métis Nation of Alberta. In November 2022, Métis Citizens overwhelmingly ratified a constitution to establish the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. In September 2023, the first election under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution was held. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is now the government of the Métis Nation within Alberta and is recognized as such by the Government of Canada through a self-government agreement signed between the parties in 2023. Currently, there are over 70,000 Métis Albertans registered as Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. As per the National Definition of Métis, ‘Métis means a person who self-identifies as a Métis, is distinct from other aboriginal peoples, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, and is accepted by the Métis Nation.’ Historic Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people then known as Métis or half-breeds who resided in the Historic Métis Nation Homeland.’ Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people descended from the Historic Métis Nation, which now comprised of all Métis Nation peoples and is one of the “aboriginal peoples of Canada” as defined in s.35 of the Constitution Act 1982.’
