Position Status: Temporary, Between 8 – 40 Hours, During the Voting Period

 

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking a Mail-In Ballot & eVote Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) to join our Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (OCEO) team to assist with the upcoming Provincial Women’s Representative By-Election, and District Council Elections for Red Deer, Calgary-Nose Hill, and Wabasca-Desmarais Métis Districts. This is a temporary honoraria-based position from February 13 – 24, 2026. Shifts running from February 13 – 24, 2026 will be determined by the number of mail-in ballots and electronic voting PIN requests received.

 

The Mail-In Ballot & eVote DRO will be responsible for helping to ensure the electoral process is carried out in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act.

 

Under direction from the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer (DCEO), Mail-In Ballot & Evote DRO will be responsible for overseeing the mail In ballot and electronic voting processing throughout the election period and will be responsible for helping to ensure the process is carried out in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act.

  

The Mail-In Ballot and eVote DRO is responsible for ensuring the fair and efficient administration of the upcoming elections, including:

  • Managing schedules for Mail-In Ballot Clerk(s);
  • Overseeing the daily setup and closure of the secure location;
  • Providing guidance and instructions to Mail-In Ballot Clerks;
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for issues raised by Mail-In Ballot Clerks;
  • Review identified eVote survey inconsistencies;
  • Prioritizing and resolving inconsistencies; and
  • Reporting to the OCEO on the conduct of Mail-In Ballot and eVote processing.

 

 

Training will be provided as part of this role, however the DRO will be expected to manage a polling location and team members with a high degree of independence.



This role will involve short timelines for training and deployment to support the voting event. Please be aware that we are expecting to onboard people as soon as possible.

  • Political awareness and sensitivity when interacting with others.
  • Ability to work well with a team or independently.
  • Working knowledge of Cree and/or Michif is considered an asset.



Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Deep knowledge of the Métis Nation of Alberta, its Bylaws, history, goals, and objectives. Knowledge of Métis culture and issues affecting Métis people is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of elections and voting processes is an asset.
  • Must not be an elected member of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.


Note: A person who is the spouse, child, brother, sister, mother or father of a candidate for the District Elections is ineligible to be appointed as a Mail-In Ballot Clerk.



Other Requirements

  • Positions will be based in Edmonton, Alberta. In office presence will be required.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to provide a clean Police Information Check (Criminal Record Check).

In November 2022, Métis Citizens overwhelmingly ratified a constitution to establish the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. In September 2023, the first election under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution was held. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is now the government of the Métis Nation within Alberta and is recognized as such by the Government of Canada through a self-government agreement signed between the parties in 2023. Currently, there are over 70,000 Métis Albertans registered as Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. As per the National Definition of Métis, ‘Métis means a person who self-identifies as a Métis, is distinct from other aboriginal peoples, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, and is accepted by the Métis Nation.’ Historic Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people then known as Métis or half-breeds who resided in the Historic Métis Nation Homeland.’ Métis Nation ‘means the Aboriginal people descended from the Historic Métis Nation, which now comprised of all Métis Nation peoples and is one of the “aboriginal peoples of Canada” as defined in s.35 of the Constitution Act 1982.’
