Machinist (Manufacturing Technician 3)  - Sutton, MA

 

Machinist Level 3

Overview:

Factory Operations is accepting applications for the position of a senior level Machinist (Level 3).  This position is for a well experienced machinist who can independently set up and operate a variety of machines (both manual and Computer Controlled Machines (CNC) to produce precision parts, handle complex setups, and perform quality checks. 

Activities include setting up and running various manual and CNC machines, using various hand and powered tools, measuring devices, ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, perform conversational programming as well as complex programming.  The candidate is expected to be productive post a short indoctrination period.  This position provides a stepping-stone to a Manufacturing Team Lead or Manufacturing Engineer through the development of advanced skills and knowledge, leading to both higher compensation and greater responsibility.  Primetals will support the development of the right candidate to these higher positions.  Placement within the salary range is dependent on level of preexisting skills.

Skills include:

  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanics, math, and material.
  • Able to understand & inspect geometric dimensioning on complex drawings with multiple datums.
  • Able to use a variety of lean principles such as SMED, Value stream map, 5-S, chalk circle and spaghetti diagrams.
  • Set-up, program, and perform CNC grinding operations to .0001” tolerances.
  • Set-up, program, and perform vertical or horizontal milling operations including rough, finish, fixed spindle, and in-line boring to +/- .0005” tolerances on CNC machines.
  • Set-up and perform horizontal turning operations including rough, finish, facing, threading, tapers, and grooving to +/- .0005” tolerances in a chuck, between centers or in combination, or on a steady-rest on CNC machines.
  • Able to set-up and perform gear grinding operations including tooth modifications, inspection, and balancing of finished gears.
  • Uses advanced judgment to plan and perform complex work.  Requires significant initiative, ingenuity, and judgment.
  • Able to accurately measure with large outside and inside micrometers on feature sizes over 25 inches (1000 mm) in size.
  • Able to train other operators on a variety of work centers. Acts as a role model for other employees.
  • Able to use all measuring tools separately and in combinations.
  • Works on large, complex parts weighing more than 4,000 pounds requiring machining which is close tolerance, complex and critical in nature. 
  • Able to set-up and perform advanced turning CNC, advanced grinding and/or advanced milling CNC operations on two machines concurrently.
  • Able to perform complex programming.
  • Able to operate and fully program EDM for multiple features to include internal and external gear teeth.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, preferably from a Technical High School and 5+ years of demonstrated success in the above skills

Compensation Range

$27.10 - $40.65 hourly. Please note that the final offer may vary within this range based on a candidates experience, skills, and qualifications.
