JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Provide professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and related communication access services to ensure equitable access for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors at Metropolitan Community College. Interpreting services support academic instruction, college programs, and campus activities in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and MCC policies.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

Interpreting & Communication Access

  • Provide accurate, effective, and impartial ASL/English interpreting and/or transliteration for:

    • Credit and non-credit classes (lectures, labs, group work, hands-on instruction)

    • Academic advising, tutoring, and student support services

    • Faculty, staff, and student meetings

    • Campus events, orientations, trainings, and college-sponsored activities

  • Interpret using appropriate communication modes based on student needs, including ASL, PSE, Signed English, oral interpreting, or other agreed-upon methods.

  • Maintain the integrity of the message, including meaning, tone, register, and intent.

Educational Environment Support

  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials, syllabi, textbooks, Canvas content, and specialized terminology.

  • Work effectively across MCC’s multiple campuses and instructional formats (in-person, hybrid, and remote).

  • Collaborate with faculty to support accessible classroom practices when appropriate.

  • Participate in team interpreting assignments as required.

Professional Practice & Compliance

  • Adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct, MCC policies, and DSS procedures.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student information and assignments.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and reliability.

  • Follow established procedures for scheduling, timekeeping, and documentation.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the Interpreting Services Coordinator, DSS Counselors and fellow interpreters.

  • Communicate promptly regarding schedule changes, concerns, or access-related issues.

Professional Development

  • Maintain required certifications, licensure, and continuing education units (CEUs).

  • Participate in required MCC trainings (e.g., safety, compliance, equity).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong receptive and expressive ASL and English skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interpreting team.

  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

  • Ability to adapt to diverse learning environments and communication styles.

  • Physical ability to interpret for extended periods with appropriate breaks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL/Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • National certification (RID/NIC, CI/CT, or equivalent) and/or Nebraska State License.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in ASL and English, including academic and technical vocabulary.

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and postsecondary accessibility requirements.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Work is performed in classrooms, labs, offices, auditoriums, and campus facilities.

  • Assignments may occur during daytime, evening, or occasional weekend hours.

  • Position may require travel between MCC campuses.

  • Physical demands include repetitive arm and hand movements, sustained visual attention, and cognitive focus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience interpreting in a postsecondary or educational setting.

  • Experience with technical, healthcare, STEM, or skilled trades coursework common in community college environments.

  • Experience with video remote interpreting (VRI) or educational technology platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Canvas).
