Purpose and Scope

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

 

Delivers at a high level of competency in school nurse program including home visits for the school district. Responsibilities require understanding of both theory and practice.  

Essential Job Functions

This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the primary job elements.

 

1.Assists the manager in recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and assigning school nurses, and in communicating with school administrators; Assesses nurse skill competency through the annual and on-going nurse professional development.

 

2.Provides medication administration training for school staff in compliance with Tennessee Medication Administration guidelines, procedures and standards; Provides guidance for school administrators on health delivery within the school setting.

 

3.Provides school nurse support and direct technical assistance for special education school-nursing related functions.

 

4.Schedules and attends home visits with parent for medically fragile and students with complex health concerns in order to facilitate transition from home to school.

 

5.Serves as a liaison to school administrators, parents, nurses and medical providers regarding health care plan developments, compliance, and ongoing monitoring for effective health service delivery in the school setting. Collaborates with supervisor and other District staff to develop short and long-range plans for assigned program or functional area.

 

6.Researches and explores feasibility of implementing new methods, technologies or programs.

 

7.Develops, schedules, implements, monitors and evaluates all programs, projects and operations in area of responsibility.

 

8.Researches, compiles data for, and prepares various statistical, administrative and/or financial reports as required.

 

9.Oversees Licensed Practical Nurses working with students receiving special education services.

 

10.Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Medical Sciences or other related field plus an additional 5 years related experience as a nurse or lead nurse in a school environment, or equivalent, for a total education/experience of 9 years. Tennessee Licensed Professional Registered Nurse required.

 

(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree=6 years plus required years of experience.
