Hiring Unit:
Athletics and Recreation

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager Wellness Programs and Facilities Operations, performs duties and responsibilities related to the general maintenance of the athletics and recreation facilities (indoors, outdoors and arena), working with the public in a service area.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain the McConnell Arena indoor ice rink, including the installation and removal of the ice surface.

  • Repair rink boards, glass and hockey nets. Perform minor repairs on grounds equipment. Assemble, set up, take apart and store, maintain, and organize equipment used in activities and sports events. Performs minor tasks related to painting and carpentry which do not require a certification, such as refresh and maintain benches, railings, stairs, nets, etc.

  • Perform general housekeeping duties in Molson Stadium and the McConnell Arena such as wash floors, corridors and dressing rooms, clean washrooms or other designated areas. Stock washrooms with supplies as required.

  • Clear snow, using pick-up truck, snow blower or shovel, from the McConnell Arena entrance, parking lot and garage areas. Ensure emergency exits are clear as per fire prevention regulations.

  • Perform lawn related duties such as mowing, planting seeds, bulbs, grass, shrubs and applying mulch for protection. Trim shrubs, trees and flowers, or pick flowers and clean flower beds. Spread soil or fertilizer as required. Water lawns, trees, plants using sprinkler, hose or watering can. Perform basic maintenance of turf field and the synthetic track.

  • Facilitate easy access for clients and participants at events. Unlock and secure building as well as gates for field access and parking purposes. Assist with building evacuation and other emergency situations. Provide directions and information to emergency services.

  • Inform clients of building regulations. Inform Security regarding inappropriate actions or behavior of clients. Provide clients access to equipment, rooms and services when necessary. Answer routine inquiries.

  • Monitor facility functions during hours of operations. Respond to facility and equipment malfunctions and report serious issues to Supervisor.

  • Accept receipt of deliveries and ensure proper storage of supplies or equipment. Liaise with internal and external service providers to show them the necessary services and repairs which need attention. Verify work and inform supervisor upon the completion of minor repairs done by internal and external service providers.

  • Uses tools and equipment such as rakes, shovels, clippers, hedge cutters, mowers, tractors, and snow blower. Drive vehicles (car or small truck/van) and the ice resurfacing machine (Zamboni) at the arena. Change the blade on the Zamboni machine as required. Perform upkeep and maintenance of seasonal equipment.

  • Activate and test sound and communication systems in McConnell Arena and Molson Stadium.

  • Upon hiring of new employees, participate in their training. Distribute tasks to student employees and ensure their completion.

  • Perform necessary administrative and clerical functions such as assigning dressing rooms, responding to telephone and client inquiries, collecting payroll sheets, posting of notices and schedules, etc.

  • Temporarily performs the tasks of an equal or lower-rated position whenever required.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • High School Leaving Diploma.

  • Mechanical ability.

  • Experience in all aspects of landscaping/groundskeeping including the use and operation of related equipment.

  • Experience driving a Zamboni an asset.

  • Valid drivers license required.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • English and French functional speaking, reading and writing.

Evening Premium $.0.96 (Fall/Winter only)

Hours of Work

Fall/Winter:

Monday to Friday:  3pm – 11:15pm

Spring/Summer:

Monday to Friday: 7:30am – 3:45pm
