About this role

MASV (massive.io) is trusted by media professionals to deliver large copyrighted files and high-res assets faster than the competition. Our customers include broadcasters, post production houses, boutique agencies, and in-house video teams worldwide.

🚀 The Opportunity

We are a lean, fast-moving company where product development is a team sport. Up until now, our Engineers and Solution Engineers have worn the design hat. We are looking for our First Founding Designer to take that hat, professionalize our user experience, and help us scale. You won’t just be designing screens in isolation. You will be a core partner in our product delivery workflow—working directly with Go-To-Market leaders (who define the "Why") and Engineering leaders (who define the "How") to co-create the "What."
We don’t hire "order takers." We hire owners who are ready to define the design culture of a growing organization.

🛠 What You Will Do

  • Translate Complexity into Clarity: Partner with stakeholders during the definition phase to visualize business problems. You will use wireframes and rapid prototypes to validate requirements before code is written.
  • Establish Design Operations: Build and maintain a lightweight, scalable Design System that mirrors our frontend architecture, ensuring engineers can build high-quality UIs efficiently without guessing.
  • Champion Progressive Delivery: You understand that great products are built in layers. You will design for phasing—defining what the "MVP" looks like versus the "General Availability" vision—ensuring we deliver value quickly.
  • Bridge the Gap: You will act as the translator between customer needs and engineering constraints, ensuring that usability risks are flagged early in the documentation phase.

🧬 Our DNA: How We Work

We are looking for someone who lives by our core values. These aren't just buzzwords; they are how we evaluate performance.

Ownership & Initiative You take full ownership of your domain. You don’t wait for a ticket to tell you what to fix; you identify issues and propose solutions autonomously. You view undefined problems not as blockers, but as challenges to solve.

Radical Communication You are proactive, not passive. You believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, enhancing text with visuals to drive clarity. You have a "documentation mindset"—if it isn’t written down or visualized, it doesn’t exist.

Data-Driven Problem Solving You avoid relying on anecdotes or "gut feel." You support your design decisions with concrete data, simulations, or A/B testing concepts. You follow the principle: if you can't measure it, don't build it. You use divide-and-conquer strategies to break complex workflows into manageable UI components.

Collaboration & Selflessness You prioritize business goals over personal preferences or aesthetic perfection. You practice humility—recognizing when a simpler design aligns better with broader objectives. You avoid single-perspective judgments (e.g., "Engineering is too slow" or "Sales is too pushy") and instead seek to understand the constraints of your teammates.

Customer Empathy You put customers first. You understand that customer confusion usually stems from complex technology or mismatched communication—not customer shortcomings. You treat every friction point in the UI as a business opportunity to improve trust.

💼 Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience designing complex web applications (B2B SaaS experience is a strong plus).
  • Expert in Modern Design Tools: Deep proficiency in Figma (Auto-layout, Components, Variables) and prototyping workflows.
  • Technical Fluency: You don't need to write code, but you must understand how HTML/CSS/JS work so you can design feasible solutions. You are comfortable reporting to Engineering.
  • Documentation-First: Experience working in a structured environment where written specs and design artifacts move together.
  • You must be a Canadian resident and legally eligible to work in Canada to apply.

🎯 Your First 90 Days

  • Audit & Systemize: Audit the current product and build a foundational component library to speed up Engineering.
  • The First Cycle: Partner with a stakeholder and an engineer to execute one complete feature lifecycle—from abstract problem statement to validated prototype to shipped feature.
  • Culture Fit: Demonstrate that you can lower the cognitive load for engineers by providing clear, actionable specifications.

What we can offer you:
💪 A competitive salary of $110,000 to $150,000/year dependent on applicant qualifications
💻 A fully remote work environment
😄 Full autonomy to grow, learn, and carve out your career path
👌 Work-life harmony (we appreciate hustle but also a good night’s rest)
🤖 Your application will be screened, assessed, and selected by a real MASV employee and we do not use artificial intelligence tools to screen or make hiring decisions for this role.

💡 Portfolio Review Note

When applying, please include a link to your portfolio. We are less interested in "Dribbble shots" and more interested in case studies that show how you took a messy problem, collaborated with a team, and used data/constraints to arrive at a solution.

What you'll do

  • You will translate complex business problems into clear design solutions and establish a scalable design system. Additionally, you will collaborate with stakeholders and engineers to ensure usability and deliver value quickly.
