Summary:

The Law Division provides legal counsel to MWRA's Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff. Law Division attorneys represent the MWRA in litigation before the federal and state courts and in administrative hearings before federal and state agencies. Law Division attorneys also handle matters in a variety of legal areas including real estate, environmental, energy, labor and employment, public procurement and construction, contracts, state ethics, open meeting law and public records. MWRA's Law Division is seeking a qualified candidate for a 2026 internship position. The intern will be supervised by Law Division attorneys for assigned work.


Posting Period: 1/21/2026 to 2/3/2026
Location: Deer Island (Winthrop), MA
Salary: $23 per hour
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm


Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include conducting legal research, reviewing, analyzing and summarizing federal, state and local legislation, laws and regulations and case law, drafting memoranda, pleadings, court filings and briefs, summarizing legal findings and other related duties as required. Attending hearings with Law Division attorneys may also be part of the internship.


Required Qualifications

  • Completion of at least 1 year of study and current enrollment at an ABA accredited law school. Individuals who have completed law school are not eligible.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent research, critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple assignments.
  • This is three-month (spring-summer), paid internship with the possibility to extend.
  • May be eligible for telework up to 50% of the work week; a waiting period may apply.
