Location: Deer Island (Winthrop), MA
Salary: $19 - $22 per hour
Work Schedule: Saturday - Wednesday 7:00am - 3:00pm


Key Responsibilities

  • Assistance in processing and preservation of samples for microbiology and chemistry analysis.
  • Performs microbiology and chemistry laboratory analyses related duties in support of the MWRA's monitoring programs.
  • Enters data into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Performed laboratory analysis, including enumeration of bacterial pollution indicators such as Enterococcus using prescribed procedures.
  • Assists with other chemical, physical or biological laboratory testing.
  • Performs related laboratory duties, calibrating field instruments and preparing materials for field sampling. (e.g. buffers/quality control standards).
  • Records field and laboratory data on paper and in data logger
  • Reports to a Laboratory Supervisor II
  • Adhere to standard laboratory practices and safety requirements.
  • Perform field water quality testing, as required.
  • Assist in the collection of other water quality samples, as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to perform careful laboratory manipulations.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Internship Period: May - Sept.
  • The preferred candidate will have completed at least the Sophomore year in a science or environmental major.
  • The candidate should have some chemistry/microbiology laboratory skills and have a general understanding of laboratory procedures as demonstrated by completing at least four chemistry/biology/microbiology laboratory courses.
