Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

The Lab Operations Manager is responsible for managing laboratory services within Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS).  This individual is accountable for daily operations, regulatory compliance, personnel management, budgeting, safety, and production of high-quality lab information within the area of responsibility.  The Lab Operations Manager collaborates with Administration, technical specialists, and medical directors on major decisions impacting the system.  This individual acts as a leader by developing an effective team, building constructive and collaborative relationships, and by supporting laboratory service line leadership goals aligned with the strategic imperatives in accordance with the organization’s mission statement.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Based on technical function of the role hired within, see below:

  • Cytopathology: Bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology or equivalent.
  • Transfusion Service and Clinical Services: Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology or equivalent.
  • Histology: Bachelor’s degree in histology, biological science, or equivalent.
  • Supportive Services:  Bachelor’s degree in a medical, health, business, management, or technical field related to the position, or Associate degree in medical, health, business, management, or technical field relate to the position.  An Associate Diploma/degree requires the obtaining of a Bachelor’s degree in same listed areas within 24 months of starting in the position.  An annual evaluation of coursework completed towards their Bachelor’s degree will be required.

Preferred/Optional: Based on technical function of the role hired within, see below:

  • Cytopathology: Cytotechnology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Transfusion Service, Clinical Services, and Supportive Services: Medical Technology (MT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program accredited through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
  • Histology: Histology program (HTL) accredited through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

EXPERIENCE 

Minimum Required: Five years’ work experience relative to the technical function of the role hired within.  One year in a leadership role showing demonstrated personal leadership effectiveness and team-building strategies.

Preferred/Optional: Three years management experience in a lab setting relative to the technical function of the role hired within. 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES 

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position.  Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required: Based on technical function of the role hired within, see below:

  • Cytopathology: Cytotechnologist (CT) certification awarded by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or International Academy of Cytology (IAC).
  • Transfusion Service and Clinical Services: Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) certification awarded by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Histology: Histotechician (HT) certification awarded by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Supportive Services: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification awarded by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Preferred/Optional: Based on technical function of the role hired within, see below:

  • Cytopathology: None
  • Transfusion Service and Clinical Services: Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) certification through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Histology:  Histotechnologist (HTL) certification awarded by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
