Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

Do you enjoy working as part of a collaborative healthcare team? Are you passionate about helping protect the community and supporting patients through education, coordination, and public health practice? The TB Intake Nurse serves as the primary point of contact for tuberculosis-related inquiries and case reporting in our busy public health clinic.  

This role receives and triages calls from the public, healthcare providers, hospitals, and laboratories regarding active TB, suspected TB, latent TB infection (LTBI), and exposures, using independent nursing judgment within established public health guidelines. The position supports TB surveillance, assists with case management and contact investigations, and provides education and guidance to patients and healthcare partners. Work is primarily office-based (approximately 80%) with limited direct patient care, including assessments and specimen collection. The TB Intake Nurse works closely with a multidisciplinary team, documents accurately in electronic health records and databases, uses Excel and other data systems for tracking and reporting, contributes to policy and procedure development, and participates in ongoing TB-related education. Strong communication, organization, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment are essential.

We Require

  • Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and a valid unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing or a compact state

We Also Value

  • Nursing case management experience

  • RN experience in a public health care setting

Job Contributions

  • Serves as initial contact for TB-related phone calls and communication from public, physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare partners

  • Provides accurate and timely information regarding TB testing, treatment, isolation, and reporting requirements

  • Receive, assess, and triage written and verbal communicable disease reports from private providers, hospitals, and other medical personnel who are reporting suspected cases of Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Applies TB knowledge, assessment skills, and decision-making skills to categorize the report as an active case, suspected case, unknown case, or not a case

  • Assigns or manages these cases for evaluation, follow-up, and completion

  • Makes independent nursing decisions within establish frameworks, policies, and standing orders and escalates appropriately

  • Case management of active TB and LTBI patients and assists with contact investigations

  • Participates in quality control and quality assurance activities, record reviews and audits, committee meetings, and training related to TB or emergency/disaster preparedness and events

  • Interacts with patients and families, case managers, epidemiologists, and medical providers in the collection and documentation of patient and contact information for medical and nursing management

  • Assists the RNs and medical providers with the provision of care in the clinic and residential visits, or provides cross-coverage in other public health clinics, including assessments and specimen collection, including blood, urine, and sputum

  • Obtains hospital and medical information about the suspected case

  • Maintains electronic patient management system and Tuberculosis databases

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Position uses vitals machines, medical devices, nebulizers, laboratory equipment, databases including MEDSIS, RedCap and others, electronic health records, and Microsoft Suite

  • Protective equipment is required, such as masks and gloves with a Personal PPE provided for airborne isolation patients as needed

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly and walk/stand to a significant degree

  • Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification is required upon hire

  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
