What You’ll Do

  • Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and hybrid/electric components.
  • Handle mechanical, hydraulic, and structural maintenance.
  • Use cutting-edge diagnostic tools and equipment.

What We’re Looking For

  • High School diploma or GED + 4 years heavy vehicle maintenance experience and 2 years technical school (or equivalent).
  • Florida CDL Class “B” with Passenger endorsement and Airbrakes.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass DOT physical and drug screen.

Description: 

This position independently performs all modes of maintenance, operation, repairs, adjustments and modifications of all subsystems and safety on Diesel and Electric transit vehicles and automotive equipment. 

This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.

Essential Functions:

  • Carries out ordinary mechanical, hydraulic or structural maintenance repairs and adjustments.
  • Determines the source of trouble; repairs or replaces defective parts or makes changes as instructed.
  • Works from written or verbal instructions, blueprints, schematics, diagrams, vendor manuals and manufacturer’s specifications to accomplish work.
  • Applies diagnostic and analytical tools in problem solving.
  • Is competent in the use of testing equipment such as compression testers, engine/transmission readers, multimeters, AMP meters, logic probes and exhaust gas analyzers.
  • Executes fields repairs on road failures and tows buses if necessary.
  • Provides assistance to lower grade mechanics when instructed.
  • Diagnoses, tunes and repairs engines; replaces all major components including cylinder heads and other major engine components.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces all electronic engine and transmission controls and sensors and wiring harness.
  • Diagnoses and repairs transmissions; replaces all internal sensors/solenoids and all major components.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces battery electric and hybrid bus components such as; controls, drive motors, inverters and battery packs.
  • Replaces engine/transmission assemblies and accessories.
  • Diagnoses and repairs air systems and components and relines brakes.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces all steering and suspension components.
  • Diagnoses and repairs all wiring harnesses.  Replaces components in electrical subsystems.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces all components of wheelchair lifts.  Executes A and C inspections.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces all A/C components.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED plus;
  • Four years’ experience in transit or heavy vehicle maintenance plus;
  • Two  years of technical school; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Florida CDL permit/license, Class “B” with Passenger endorsement and Airbrakes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical and drug screen.
  • Ability to work in open bays, inside buses and outside in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Ability to provide own tools.
  • Employees must be able to communicate in English on the work site.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent service.

 

Work Environment and Special Considerations:

 

  • As a member of a bargaining unit, this position follows a seniority-based system for bidding on shifts and days off.

  • Employees in this position must comply with all requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the testing of safety sensitive-employees.  This position is considered safety-sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
  • LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX’s emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency or disaster.
