Position Title: Software Development Engineer

Employment Type: Full-time, Existing vacancy

Location: Ottawa ON, Onsite

About Lumentum

At Lumentum, we’re building the tech behind the world’s fastest networks and most advanced systems. Our optical and photonic solutions power everything from AI and cloud computing to data centers, telecom, and advanced manufacturing.

We’re a global team of innovators working where light meets technology, solving big challenges that keep the world connected and moving forward. If shaping the future of connectivity excites you, you’ll fit right in.

Why You’ll Love This Role

This role is for a true software generalist who enjoys writing clean, well-structured code and solving real problems across a wide technical landscape.

Software touches nearly everything Lumentum designs, builds, and ships -- and this position exists to design and build new software, evolve existing systems, and ensure the overall software ecosystem is robust, scalable, and maintainable. You’ll work on a constantly changing mix of projects: new applications, infrastructure tooling, automation, and modernization of legacy systems. The common thread is always the same -- writing software to solve meaningful problems, regardless of domain or technology.

You’ll collaborate closely with engineers and specialists across disciplines including software, photonics, electronics, manufacturing, robotics/automation, and IT. That means working on problems where software intersects with real hardware, real processes, and real constraints. If you enjoy learning from people with deep expertise in different domains, and turning complex, multidisciplinary requirements into clean, reliable code, this role will suit you well.

What We’re Looking For

Education:
Degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field -- or equivalent real-world experience and demonstrated ability.

Experience:

Experience level is flexible. We value strong programming fundamentals, broad technical curiosity, and the ability to learn and work effectively across diverse software systems.

A genuine enjoyment of programming (often reflected in personal projects, experimentation, or ongoing skill development) is an asset.

Skills:

  • Strong programming fundamentals and genuine enjoyment of coding, regardless of specific language background
  • Experience with one or more general-purpose languages (e.g., Python, C#, C/C++, Java, etc.) and the ability to pick up others quickly
  • Solid understanding of software design, system architecture, and how components fit together
  • Comfort working across different layers of software: applications, services, databases, automation, and tooling
  • Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development practices
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, clarify requirements, and translate them into robust software solutions
  • Strong ability to write clean, maintainable, well-documented code

What is NOT required:

Although all accumulated expertise is an asset (especially if relevant), this role specifically does NOT require:

  • Deep specialization in a single language, framework, or tech stack
  • Prior experience in photonics, manufacturing, or hardware domains
  • Being an expert in all listed technologies (breadth + learning ability matter more)
  • Formal certifications or “checklist” credentials
  • Strict adherence to one role boundary (e.g., “only backend” or “only UI”)

Perks You’ll Love

  • Flexible time off
  • Health and wellness benefits (physical and mental)
  • Tuition reimbursement and career growth support
  • A workplace built for you: free gym, games room, prayer room
  • Subsidized meals, free coffee/tea
  • Employee stock options and incentive plans
  • A collaborative, innovative, and inclusive culture

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $80,000- $129,500 (Flexible).

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications. In line with our commitment to being a great place to work, Lumentum offers competitive total rewards which may include annual bonus, equity, and comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
