The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for overseeing maintenance operations for LSU Veterinary Medicine facilities and the associated steam and chilled water plant systems that support critical clinical, research, and teaching functions. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of facilities and utility infrastructure, with a strong focus on minimizing downtime and protecting sensitive animal care and laboratory environments. The Superintendent leads skilled trades and plant operators, manages preventive and corrective maintenance programs, coordinates contractors, and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. This position works closely with veterinary staff, engineers, and facilities leadership to support mission-critical operations, respond to emergencies, and drive continuous improvement in facility and plant performance.
Job Responsibilities
Oversee daily maintenance operations for Veterinary Medicine facilities, including clinical, laboratory, research, teaching, and animal care spaces. (25%)
Ensure reliable operation and maintenance of critical building systems such as HVAC, steam, chilled water, plumbing, electrical, life safety, and building automation systems. (15%)
Direct the safe and efficient operation of central steam and chilled water plants serving veterinary facilities. (10%)
Develop, implement, and manage preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend asset life. (10%)
Plan, prioritize, and schedule work orders, shutdowns, and outages to minimize impact to animal care, research, and clinical operations. (10%)
Coordinate and manage contractors, vendors, and service providers, including scope development, oversight, and quality control. (10%)
Respond to emergencies and system failures, providing leadership during after-hours, on-call, and critical incidents. (10%)
Collaborate with veterinary staff, researchers, engineers, and facilities leadership to support mission-critical needs and special requirements. (10%)
Special and Physical Requirements
This position requires a valid driver's license, will require an MVR, and is subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
This position is classified as a safety and security-sensitive position. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
This position is considered emergency essential and may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.
This position will require a physical evaluation based on the physical demands required.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Four years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges; OR
Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges; OR
Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges.
