The DON ensures the delivery of high-quality care to residents or patients, while maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards. This leadership role involves managing nursing staff, developing and implementing care policies, overseeing resident assessments, and coordinating with other departments to ensure cohesive care. The DON plays a vital role in maintaining the well-being and safety of residents, while fostering a positive work environment for nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

Oversee the daily operations of the nursing department, ensuring that nursing staff deliver high-quality care to residents and patients.
Lead, mentor, and supervise nursing staff, including registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs).
Assist in recruiting, training, and onboarding new nursing staff, ensuring they are equipped to perform their duties to the highest standard.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching, development, and disciplinary actions as needed.

Resident Care and Clinical Oversight:

Ensure that nursing care is in compliance with facility policies, state and federal regulations, and best practices.
Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized care plans for residents or patients, ensuring care meets their medical and personal needs.
Collaborate with physicians, therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to develop and coordinate comprehensive care plans.
Monitor resident health conditions and ensure timely interventions and adjustments to care plans.

Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing healthcare and long-term care services.
Prepare for and participate in inspections, audits, and surveys by regulatory agencies, ensuring that all necessary documentation and procedures are in place.
Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, reduce risks, and improve overall care quality.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, care plans, and nursing documentation in accordance with facility and regulatory standards.

Budget and Resource Management:

Assist in developing and managing the nursing department’s budget, controlling costs while maintaining high standards of care.
Monitor staffing levels and resource allocation to ensure adequate coverage and efficiency.
Manage inventory and ordering of medical supplies and equipment to meet the needs of residents and staff.

Staff Training and Development:

Provide ongoing education and training opportunities for nursing staff to ensure they stay updated on the latest clinical practices and regulations.
Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork, communication, and professional growth among the nursing staff.
Lead regular nursing team meetings to review policies, care protocols, and resident health updates.

Resident and Family Communication:

Serve as the primary point of contact for residents and their families regarding care plans, health concerns, and nursing services.
Address and resolve any concerns or complaints raised by residents, families, or staff related to nursing care.
Communicate regularly with families to keep them informed of their loved ones’ health status and changes in care plans.

Emergency and Crisis Management:

Lead the nursing department in responding to medical emergencies, ensuring appropriate interventions and documentation.
Develop and maintain emergency preparedness protocols, ensuring that nursing staff are trained to respond to crisis situations.

Qualifications
Education: Associate's degree in Nursing (BSN) required; a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration is preferred.
Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of nursing experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role, preferably in long-term care, acute care, or rehabilitation settings.
Skills:

Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to mentor and guide nursing staff.
In-depth knowledge of nursing practices, patient care, and regulatory standards in healthcare.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with compassion and professionalism.
Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and healthcare management software.
