About this role

Overview

The Construction Controller is responsible for directing and managing all construction project cost accounting and related finance functions within the Development Department of the Company. This position ensures accurate job cost reporting, compliance with construction contracts and company policies, and effective oversight of construction-related budgets, forecasts, accounts payable and other related back-office functions. The role requires strong leadership, analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments to support strategic development initiatives.


Responsibilities

Supervisory Responsibilities include:

Supervises project accounting staff, contract administrators and Development accounts payable staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization’s policies and applicant laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

 

 

Accounting Responsibilities:

  • Prepare company-wide capital expenditure forecasts.
  • Review and monitor costs incurred vs. budgets for individual development projects.
  • Produce and analyze data and reports to assist project managers in the management of their projects – pay applications, change orders, collecting tenant allowances where applicable, etc.
  • Oversee accounts payable for the Development Department, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist in the monthly closing process of construction in progress to the general ledger.
  • Review project commitments for authorization in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provide necessary information for company auditors during audits.
  • Prepare reports or provide information as requested by the Senior Vice President of Development or CFO. 

Qualifications

  • Education: BA/BS degree in Accounting preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in all aspects of construction accounting, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to manage and develop teams.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively with departments across the organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Prior experience communicating with upper management and handling issues encountered by Controllers.
