Senior Maritime Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior Maritime Engineer (Structures) to join our Sydney-based team and play a key role in the delivery of major maritime and coastal engineering projects across Australia.

This is a senior technical position for a highly capable engineer with deep experience in the design of maritime structures, who enjoys solving complex engineering problems and mentoring junior engineers.

About the role

As a Senior Maritime Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, specification and delivery of maritime and coastal structures, including ports, harbours, berthing and mooring systems, coastal protection works and related infrastructure.

Working under the direction of a Project or Engineering Manager on large projects — and leading smaller projects end‑to‑end — you will apply sound engineering judgement, develop innovative solutions, and ensure high‑quality technical outcomes for clients.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and assess maritime and coastal structures constructed from concrete, steel, timber and engineered products
  • Deliver engineering studies, designs, calculations, reports, specifications and contract documentation
  • Lead small projects or manage work packages on larger, multi‑disciplinary projects
  • Coordinate and contribute to projects involving geotechnical, structural, dredging and coastal elements
  • Review designs and documentation prepared by other engineers and drafters
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and supervision to junior engineers
  • Liaise with clients, statutory authorities and external consultants
  • Ensure work is delivered to agreed scope, programme, budget and quality standards
  • Contribute to bids, proposals and expressions of interest, including scopes and estimates
  • Work in accordance with Australian Standards, client requirements and industry best practice
  • Actively participate in the company’s quality and continuous improvement programs

About you

You are a technically strong and commercially aware engineer who enjoys working collaboratively and taking ownership of outcomes.

You will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Approximately 10–15 years’ experience in maritime / coastal engineering
  • Strong experience in the design and assessment of ports, harbours and marine structures
  • Experience working in a consulting and/or commercial engineering environment
  • Proficiency with relevant structural and maritime analysis software (e.g. SPACE GASS, Strand7, STAAD.Pro, SESAM, OPTIMOOR – desirable)
  • Experience managing projects or leading design packages
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team

Professional registration:

  • Eligibility for Chartered Professional Engineer (Engineers Australia)
  • RPEQ or ability to obtain registration within an agreed timeframe
  • Chartered / Registered Engineer status is highly regarded
