The Safety Specialist is responsible for fulfilling all elements of compliance prescribed by Section 3342 of Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations. Building the program will include adopting multiple standards and applying them at all locations to protect health care workers, patients, visitors, and other stakeholder from aggressive and violent behavior and will include policy, plans, training, screening, reporting, response, investigation, and continuous review/mitigation. In addition to compliance, builds supporting programs and capabilities which represent best practices for early identification, intervention, and implementation of response protocols to reduce site-to-site variation; and ultimately reduce workplace violence incidents, injuries, and lost days. A best practices program will ultimately enhance employee perceptions of safety, contributing to the patient experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required:

Valid California Driver’s License. Must provide DMV report prior to offer being made. No driving infractions 5 years prior to hire or during time in this job. Infractions include DUI, Suspended or Revoked License, Reckless Driving.

Kaweah Health approved crisis intervention Instructor training within 90 days of hire/transfer.


Experience
Required: Bachelor’s degree in health care, public health, sociology, education or related field; or a minimum of three years relevant experience in education or professional training.

Preferred:

If assigned to Workplace Violence: three or more years of experience with Cal/OSHA regulatory requirements; workplace violence prevention or managing assaultive behavior in a healthcare setting; training delivery, teaching, and curriculum development.

If assigned to Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Planning: three or more years of experience with Cal/OSHA, EOC, CMS and Joint Commission requirements.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Demonstrated success working in a highly regulated work environment.
Demonstrated ability to develop programs, processes, procedures, and training in collaboration with multiple cross-functional work groups and tailor approaches to highly diverse organizational structures and situations.
Demonstrated background as an effective public speaker/trainer/teacher. Must present as approachable, open, professional, and positive.
Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Must be highly organized and detail-oriented. Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
PC skills including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Must be willing to travel on short notice and during non-standard working hours.

Able to work in different environments and utilize effective time management skills.
If assigned to Workplace Violence:

Must be knowledgeable of processes, tools, and techniques for assessing and mitigating workplace violence in diverse situations.

Demonstrated training delivery, teaching, and curriculum development expertise.

Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and employ strong reasoning skills.

If assigned to Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Planning:

Considerable knowledge of emergency management concepts, principles, frameworks, and best practices, especially the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), and its various functions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential

Participates in the development and review of safety related organizational goals and supports service locations and partner departments as needed.

Manages risk assessments/surveys, audits and prioritizes and communicates opportunities for risk improvement.

Performs duties in accordance with program guidelines and agency policies.

Assists with curriculum and program development for assigned area.

Coordinates staff trainings.

Promotes an organizational culture that embraces workplace values of respect, caring, support, effective communication, teamwork, collaboration, accountability and responsibility; and work with staff to create and maintain a workplace environment reflective of those values.

Collects, analyzes and reports data as required.
 

Addendum (essential for specific dept)

IF ASSIGNED TO WORKPLACE VIOLENCE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Facilitates violence prevention curricula with staff.

IF ASSIGNED TO EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND DISASTER PLANNING ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Leads Emergency Preparedness Committee and help to maintain an up-to-date hospital Disaster Preparedness Plan and the required documentation, including Letters-of-Intent.

Coordinates the hospital disaster/emergency drills as required by Joint Commission, CMS or other regulatory agency.

Assists in developing and evaluating safety goals, and standards; assists and advises management in promoting an overall safety awareness.


Additional

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Range

$32.00 -$48.00
