Summary

  • The Nurse Educator in a professional member of the health care team providing educational support to staff that direct care to patients, and assists in the standardization of patient education practices. 
  • Administers, organizes and conducts training and education programs in concert with employee orientation, mandatory/required training, in-services, continuing education, on-the-job training, quality assessment, and process improvement projects. 
  • Assists the multi-disciplinary team content experts in the development of appropriate and standardized patient education materials. 
  • The Nurse Educator serves as a consultant, facilitator, preceptor and educator for staff and managers. 
  • Maintains records of orientation, in-service and training activities. 
  • Contributes to the review, revision and distribution of policies and procedures. 
  • Works with managers to design and develop programs to support and implement unit level goals and objectives. 
  • Performs under the direction of leadership but independently seeking guidance and direction as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of curriculum development which incorporates educational theories, principles and models based on adult learning. 
  • Designs curricula which support departmental education needs and nursing practice that reflect current trends in the health-care environment and organizational priorities. 
  • Exhibits the skills and abilities to design, implement, monitor and manage curricula based on sound, contemporary educational models, principles, and best evidence. Implements programs to meet staff development goals, objectives, competencies and outcomes by utilizing a variety of innovative and creative teaching strategies to meet individual and group learning needs. 
  • Maintains current nursing knowledge and skills in theory and practice that reflect evidence-based, up-to-date knowledge. 
  • Serves as a clinical expert/consultant within area of expertise. 
  • Synthesize, integrate and generate knowledge pertinent to nursing education and practice. 
  • Utilizes current research findings or evidence based practice in curriculum development following the evidence based model. 
  • Pursues research opportunities to enhance and/or maintain professional self-development and professional nursing practice. 
  • Communicate best practice in nursing education by integrating intercultural and interdisciplinary competence in the development of curricula, course design, teaching and nursing practice 
  • Promote a professional record by participating in ongoing professional development. 
  • Maintains membership in a national specialty organization. 
  • Seeks educational opportunities to increase and maintain own knowledge in area of specialization. 
  • Contribute to professional stature of nursing within organization by presenting or publishing locally, statewide or nationally. 
  • Participates in educational programs for the community annually through hospital or community events. 
  • Leads, develops and serve as role model/mentor to others. 
  • Actively participates in department, hospital and system wide committees, taskforce and initiatives 
  • Participate in relevant accreditation readiness. 
  • Maintain current knowledge of county, state and federal guidelines/requirements, as they apply to job. 
  • Assist with promoting and maintaining interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork through effective lines of communication and participation with other departments and disciplines 
  • Support quality or performance improvement initiatives. 
  • Participates in meeting goals and objectives of assigned areas, professional development and institution that are evidence based and fiscally sound. 
  • Demonstrate ability to anticipate trends and challenges, or problem areas, and recommend appropriate action Performs other related duties based on the needs of assigned area. 
  • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list. 
  • Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required. 
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

  • Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.

  • Must have ability to show compassion, patience and maintain non-judgmental approach to patients, their families as well as other employees and customers. 
  • Unit Specific Competencies: Must have clinical knowledge, skill and ability to fully and accurately complete all required unit competencies, as indicated in the unit competency check-list.

Credentials

  • Valid Florida RN license is required. 
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment. 
  • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
