JOB SUMMARY

Indian Health Board is hiring full-time Medical Assistant who is motivated, outgoing and passionate to care for our patients.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Primarily assists medical providers and psychiatric provider needs as they arise: perform functions related to "rooming" the patients for practitioner examinations, including vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, weight & height), medication reconciliation, allergies update, and documenting complaint into electronic medical record.
  • Assist the Registered Nurses and practitioners in ongoing health maintenance and health promotions. Taking medical histories.
  • Coordinates with interpreters for each patient visit as needed.
  • Assists the licensed health care provider with during exams, medical procedures, dressings, ace wraps, and splints. Ensure consent forms are complete prior to procedures. Removing sutures and changing dressings.
  • Taking electrocardiograms (EKG) as ordered by licensed health care provider.
  • Preparing and administering medications, injections and immunizations as directed by a physician, advanced practice registered nurse and other licensed health care providers.
  • Instruct patient about medication and special diets per licensed health care provider.
  • Assists with nurse triage phone line daily by answering telephone calls to assist in patients' needs, medication refills and clinic flow.
  • Maintain proper chart order: updating and filling patient medical records; complete paperwork as required.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES

  • Keep record of temperatures of refrigerator and freezer in treatment room.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities to improve patient care and clinic flow.
  • Other duties deemed necessary by nursing supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and respect for American Indian cultures and other cultures served by IHB.
  • Ability to understand and meet the needs of the patient through respectful, courteous and caring interactions with patients, families and other health professionals.
  • Actively participates and works positively, flexibly and cooperatively in a team effort to accomplish the goals of the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis.
  • Ability to provide safe and effective patient care within the scope of Certified Medical Assistant in Minnesota.

REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of an approved training program in medical assisting
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant
  • Current CPR certification

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of children up and in excess of 50 pounds. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations requiring a range of safety and other precautions: Bloodborne pathogens; Physical hazards, e. g. needle pricks, etc. Chemical Hazards, e. g. Germicide wipes and EMPOWER medical instruments cleaner.
