We are IG UK's Crypto product engineering team, having successfully delivered the company's #1 strategic priority - a fully licensed, FCA-regulated crypto trading platform launched in December 2025. We maintain elite engineering standards through cloud-native AWS architecture, comprehensive observability, and a culture of end-to-end ownership where engineers drive product outcomes, not just technical deliverables.
Your primary responsibility will be to contribute to backend services that handle substantial transaction volumes, real-time market data, and time-sensitive operations. You'll work closely with senior engineers to design and build event-driven systems using Java, Spring Boot and Kafka that are robust, observable, and performant. You won't just write code – you'll learn to own features end-to-end, from development through to production on AWS (EKS), building the skills to take full accountability for your work. You'll leverage AI-assisted development tools as a core part of your workflow – we expect engineers to actively embrace AI to multiply their impact.

What you'll do
Build and maintain Java services (Spring Boot) that handle real-time trading operations and significant data throughput
Develop event-driven systems using Kafka – building producers, consumers, and stream processors that keep our trading platforms responsive
Develop your skills across the full stack – writing code, building CI/CD pipelines, deploying to AWS, and learning production operations
Partner with Product, Design, and Frontend teams to deliver features that drive business growth and champion the client – not just tick boxes
Participate actively in product development, from requirements discussions to seeing customers using your software in production
Implement observability that matters – contribute to monitoring, alerting, and tracing that catches issues before clients notice them
Learn to drive technical excellence in performance, scalability, and security – in fintech, "good enough" isn't good enough
Participate in troubleshooting and resolving production incidents – developing the skills to diagnose issues quickly and implement lasting fixes
Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and stay at the cutting edge of modern engineering practices
Contribute to technical discussions and code reviews – raising the bar for yourself and the team while learning from more experienced engineers
For this role, we're looking for someone with:
3+ years of backend engineering experience with Java as your primary language
Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems – ideally Kafka, but experience with similar technologies (AWS SNS/SQS) is valuable
Hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure) – you've deployed and operated applications in the cloud and understand core services
Experience working with containerised applications and Kubernetes (EKS) – you've deployed services and understand the basics of container orchestration
Good understanding of relational databases – you're comfortable writing SQL queries, understand transaction isolation levels, have experience with indexing strategies
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices – you've worked with automated build and deployment processes
Experience with AI-assisted development tools is expected – we're looking for engineers who see AI as a force multiplier, not a threat
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

A keen interest in ongoing learning, both business and technical – you'll gain deep understanding of IG's trading products and financial markets
Familiarity with financial services or trading platforms is highly desirable but not essential – we'll help you learn the domain if you bring strong engineering fundamentals
Willingness to participate in on-call rotations as you grow – production ownership means being there when it counts
This is a hybrid position (3 days onsite, 2 days remote work)
