Position Summary:

The Dock Attendant works under the supervision of the Dock Supervisor. Dock Attendant works in coordination with the marine crew to ensure the safety of passengers boarding/de-boarding at the dock. Dock Attendant provide passengers with safe, secure, and hospitable guest service at all times.

The Deckhand, under the direct supervision of the First Officer, serves on deck aboard a US Coast Guard inspected small passenger vessel, practicing good seamanship while performing duties as a Statue Cruises crew member in fulfilling the job tasks required for a Deck Security & Safety Watch, Customer Service provider and a Steward of our Respect our Planet program. 

Placement in Dock Attendant or Deckhand role to be determined by the Port Captains, based on skill level and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Dock Attendant:

  • Assists guests and answers questions in regards to Ferry Schedule, The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island or other local attractions.
  • Handling lines thrown from the vessels to the dock.
  • Assisting Vessel Crew with pulling the gangway on and off each vessel.
  • Assisting guests on and off the vessel.
  • Properly inform guests how to safely board and disembark the gangway/vessel.
  • Follow instructions from the vessel crew and dock supervisors.
  • Fill out Island passenger log sheets, when applicable.

 Deckhand:

  • Ensures the Safety and Security of Passengers.
  • Familiar with ground tackle, emergency gear, deck gear, and vessel emergency plans.
  • Performs safety functions assigned on the Watch Quarter and Emergency Station Bill.
  • Practices Good housekeeping onboard the vessel including heads, windows, and decks. Follow company's COVID-19 cleaning and sanitizing procedures.
  • Preparation of vessels(s) for operational readiness.
  • Responsible for checking passengers’ bags, knapsacks, etc. at the direction of the Company Security Officer, Vessel Security Officer, or other designated Company Representative.
  • Tends gangway(s) during passenger loading and unloading.
  • Tends mooring lines during vessel maneuvers and while alongside the dock.
  • Wears Statue Cruises Uniform at all times while in the presence of guests.
  • Assists guests and answers questions in regards to The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island or other local attractions.
  • Assists in the queuing and pre-boarding of guests in the entrance lines.
  • Complies with and enforces established policies and procedures.
  • Follows all National Park Service directives, and The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island policies, to insure all passengers, quests, and visitors to the Area have an Interpretive Experience.
  • Splices lines and wire rope.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Dock Attendant:

  • Preference given to those who have maritime and customer service experience.
  •  Outstanding guest service personality is a must.
  •  Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a pleasant and professional manner.
  •  Ability to work well under pressure and handle emergency response.
  •  We are a quality hospitality organization that serves the public year round. Working weekends and holidays may be required.
  •  Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Statue Cruises from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Crewmembers with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. 

Deckhand:

  • 2+ years marine experience required.
  • Must show CPR/ First Aid Cert and TWIC.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a pleasant and professional manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle emergency response.
