About the Role:

The CMA at Hewitt Rehabilitation and Wellness Center plays a critical role in supporting the healthcare team by safely administering prescribed medications to residents in accordance with established protocols and regulatory guidelines. This position ensures that all medication-related tasks are performed accurately and timely, contributing to the overall health and well-being of residents. The Medication Assistant collaborates closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals to monitor residents for any adverse reactions or side effects and reports findings promptly. This role requires a compassionate and detail-oriented individual who can maintain meticulous records and uphold patient confidentiality at all times. Ultimately, the Medication Assistant helps enhance the quality of care provided within the facility by ensuring medication management is handled with the utmost professionalism and care.

CMA- Certified Medication Aide (Medical Assistants do not qualify)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-approved Medication Assistant training program.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Medication Assistant as required by the state of Texas.
  • Basic knowledge of medication administration principles and safety protocols.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a long-term care or rehabilitation facility.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong understanding of common medications used in geriatric care.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer medications to residents as prescribed by licensed healthcare providers, following the facility’s medication administration policies and procedures.
  • Observe and document residents’ responses to medications, reporting any adverse reactions or concerns to nursing staff immediately.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medication records, including medication logs and resident charts, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of medication carts and supplies to ensure efficient medication delivery throughout the day.
  • Communicate effectively with residents to explain medication schedules and provide reassurance, while respecting their dignity and privacy.

The Medication Assistant utilizes strong attention to detail and organizational skills daily to ensure medications are administered accurately and on schedule, minimizing the risk of errors. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with residents, explaining medication routines, and collaborating with nursing staff to report observations. Critical thinking and observational skills are applied to monitor residents for side effects or changes in condition, enabling timely intervention. Familiarity with healthcare documentation and record-keeping ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and supports continuity of care. Additionally, empathy and patience are vital interpersonal skills that help build trust and comfort with residents, enhancing overall care experience.
