About this role

SFGATE UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism Summer Intern, 2026

Your Impact:
We are looking for two budding digital journalists to join us here at SFGATE, the most-read media site on the entire west coast, for the summer of 2026. This opportunity will immerse the right candidates in the fast-paced world of digital media. They will learn the basics of day-to-day operations for a website with around hundreds of thousands of visits per day and contribute to the daily news cycle, getting valuable real-world clips, plus being part of daily audience building conversations. This position will work closely with our editors to assist with various curation and content-related tasks in all sections of the site. Responsibilities will be tailored to the candidates’ skillsets, but could include story research, article packaging, social media responsibilities, getting photos in the field, attending press conferences and other duties as may be assigned. You will get an opportunity to learn content ideation and occasionally write stories, as needed and as a development opportunity.

Why SFGATE?
Launched in 1994, SFGATE.com was one of the first large-market media sites in the world and served as the exclusive digital home of the San Francisco Chronicle for 19 years. In 2019, the Chronicle (which can now be found online at the paywalled sfchronicle.com) and SFGATE officially became two separately run entities with their own editorial staffs and independent newsrooms.

Today, SFGATE is a digital-only publication that boasted more than 28 million visits a month in 2025 and tells the stories of the people, places and ideas that make San Francisco, and the Bay Area at large, the weird and wonderful place that it is. We help readers navigate their day, whether it’s by keeping them updated on big breaking news, guiding them to interesting local experiences or sharing a part of the Bay they haven’t seen before.

The site is home to seven verticals: Culture, offering a unique mix of the entertainment news you actually need, and the underground stories from hidden corners of the Bay Area you want; Local, the premier destination for everything that life in San Francisco encompasses (from wildly expensive real estate to schools to what it’s like to live above a raucous bar); Sports, covering the intersection of sports and culture; Travel, covering everything from flight deals and travel news to hotel hacks and under-the-radar day trips; Politics, where we keep you up to speed on all local, state and national politics that have implications in the Bay Area; Food, where we tell you the backstory of the people behind the bar and in the kitchen; and News; plus, SFGATE has satellite editors covering California Mountain Towns (including Lake Tahoe), the Central Coast, and Hawaii, plus entire bureaus covering Los Angeles and National Parks across the American West.

Requirements:
- Must be a current student in UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism
- Interns will work 30 hours a week for 8.5 weeks, June-August 2026.
- Passion for journalism and the internet, including keeping a pulse on what’s trending
- Knowledge of the Bay Area
- Ability to quickly grasp new concepts
- Strong attention to detail
- Familiarity with online publications
- Experience at a school newspaper/magazine or similar publication
- Enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn
- Familiarity with social media, particularly Twitter, Instagram and Reddit
