Role Summary
Hearst Magazines is seeking a Senior Vice President of Engineering to lead the vision, strategy, and execution of our technology organization, reporting to the Chief Product and Technology Officer. This leader will ensure that Hearst Magazines’ technology remains current, adaptable, and strategically planned for the future, supporting both today’s business needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.
You will oversee a geographically distributed engineering organization of full-time employees and contractors, managing vendor relationships and best-cost delivery models. As a strategic partner to Product, Design, Data, and Business leadership, you will drive platform excellence, operational effectiveness, and the responsible adoption of AI and data technologies to enhance the content creation process and tools, personalization, and consumer experiences across our portfolio of iconic brands.
What You’ll Do
• Set and maintain the technology strategy, architecture and roadmap. Ensure Hearst Magazines’ systems, tools, and architecture remain up to date with evolving industry standards while building clear, future-focused plans for growth, scalability, and innovation.
• Ensure future-ready architecture. Oversee a composable, cloud-based architecture that supports both internal platforms (CMS, data, and content management) and consumer-facing experiences. Balance flexibility and standardization to enable innovation at scale.
• Drive AI and data enablement. Partner with Data and Product teams to implement AI-assisted engineering, content, and workflow capabilities. Build foundations for data-driven personalization, recommendations, and operational efficiency.
• Foster collaboration with Product and Design. Create a culture of shared accountability and partnership, where technology and product roadmaps are aligned to deliver measurable business outcomes and exceptional user experiences.
• Lead platform and engineering operations. Ensure reliability, performance, and security across all digital products. Champion observability, CI/CD, and best-in-class engineering practices.
• Evolve organizational structure and talent. Transform and grow a high-performing, inclusive engineering organization; mentor and develop leaders; recruit top-tier talent across engineering and data disciplines.
• Manage global delivery. Build and run a balanced mix of nearshore, offshore, and best-shore teams. Develop frameworks for vendor management, productivity measurement, and IP protection while maintaining high velocity and quality.
• Steward technology investments. Align budgets and priorities to business goals, ensuring the right balance between innovation and operational excellence.
• Champion security and governance. Maintain rigorous security, compliance, and data protection standards across platforms and products.
What You’ve Done
• 15+ years in software and technology leadership, with 7+ years leading large, multi-geo engineering organizations and managing vendor ecosystems.
• Proven track record of keeping enterprise technology environments current and strategically positioned for the future — including cloud migration, modular architecture, and data platform evolution.
• Experience implementing AI and data technologies for engineering productivity, personalization, or content workflows.
• Deep understanding of CMS ecosystems (including headless or hybrid architectures), microservices, and consumer digital experiences.
• Strong experience in building and managing hybrid teams of FTEs and contractors across best-cost locations, ensuring efficiency, consistency, and continuity.
• Demonstrated success partnering with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to deliver consumer-facing platforms and products.
• Excellent communication, executive presence, and ability to translate complex technical concepts into strategic business outcomes.

• Engineering effectiveness: Delivery velocity, quality, and developer satisfaction (measured through DORA metrics and engagement).
• AI adoption impact: Improved productivity, code quality, and innovation from AI-assisted engineering.
• Vendor and team efficiency: Performance of nearshore/offshore partnerships and cost optimization without quality loss.
• Platform reliability & consumer impact: Uptime, speed, Core Web Vitals, and consumer experience metrics.
• Cross-functional partnership: Alignment, clarity, and shared delivery between Technology, Product, and Design.
The base salary for this role is between $300,000 - $350,000/year. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
