Title: Assistant Vice President for Development

Position Summary

The Assistant Vice President for Development (AVP) is a senior leadership position responsible for the strategic execution of Harvey Mudd College’s major and principal giving programs. The AVP serves as the primary architect of the frontline fundraising operation, providing inspirational leadership and modeling the way for a team of five philanthropic advisors. Together, they secure the resources necessary to advance the Strategic Plan of Harvey Mudd College and meet ambitious campaign objectives. This role requires a leader who can balance sophisticated organizational management with an active, personal commitment to high-level donor participation and outreach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Frontline Fundraising and Strategic Engagement

  • Principal Prospect Management: Personally cultivate and solicit a portfolio of approximately 100 high-capacity prospects. Formulate sophisticated "moves management" strategies that result in successful stewardship of donors at the $1M+ level.

  • Academic Articulation: Develop a deep understanding of the funding needs of HMC’s academic departments and business units, translating complex institutional priorities into compelling cases for support.

  • Executive Partnership: Act as a senior resource for the President and Cabinet, preparing them for high-level prospect meetings and ensuring their engagement in the fundraising process is both productive and rewarding.


Programmatic Leadership and Campaign Readiness

  • Campaign Infrastructure: Ensure the College’s major and principal giving programs are positioned for the quiet phase of the upcoming comprehensive campaign.

  • Campus Liaison Oversight: Lead the Advancement Campus Liaison (ACL) Program, fostering formalized partnerships between the Office of College Advancement and the HMC academic departments.

  • Brand Alignment: Collaborate with the Office of Communications and Marketing to ensure that all development messaging is consistent with the HMC brand and campaign goals.

  • Volunteer Pipeline Development: Identify and engage prominent alumni and friends to serve in leadership and advisory capacities, ensuring a diverse and capable pipeline for future volunteer boards.


Management and Mentorship

  • Inspirational Leadership: Lead by example, modeling the way for the fundraising team through personal excellence in solicitation and stewardship.

  • Outreach and Participation: Actively encourage increased participation and outreach across the team, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit that seeks out new markets and untapped philanthropic potential.

  • Team Mentorship: Manage and mentor five philanthropic advisors, setting clear expectations and establishing metrics for success that prioritize both quantitative results and qualitative growth.

  • Professional Advocacy: Foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement, advocating for the staff's professional development while ensuring a data-driven approach to prospect engagement.

  • As a key campus leader and leader within OCA, support OCA's objective to cultivate and sustain a robust culture of philanthropy that reflects belief and confidence in HMC’s leadership and mission. Reinforce that every gift supports people and programs across campus, inspiring shared pride and a collective commitment to the College’s future. Promote a sense of hospitality, giving and generosity, ensuring that individuals understand the vital role of philanthropy in contributing to the College’s success.
     

Campus Collaboration: 

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key offices and partners across campus, including the President’s Office, the Dean of Faculty Office, Admission, Financial Aid, Student Affairs, Financial Affairs, Communications & Marketing, academic departments and centers, and Career Services, to coordinate and amplify engagement opportunities. 
     

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible leadership in development, with documented success closing six and seven-figure gifts.

  • Skills: Intellectual depth, maturity, and the professional credibility to garner the trust of world-class faculty and senior leadership.


Remote Work Eligibility: 


Category B:
All staff positions, regardless of remote work eligibility, require an initial 30-calendar-day on-campus work period. Based on an evaluation by the supervisor and area Vice President, this position is classified as Category B as defined in the College’s Remote Work Policy, with occasional ad-hoc remote work flexibility (as needed). Your approved remote work arrangements under Category B allow for up to one remote work day per week during the academic year and up to one remote work days during the non-academic year. Please note these days may vary depending on departmental and College needs.


Your standard working hours will generally be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, though these hours may vary depending on departmental and College needs. All remote work arrangements, including ad-hoc remote work, must be approved by the direct supervisor, area Cabinet member, and Human Resources, and are subject to periodic review based on institutional needs. These arrangements are neither guaranteed nor considered entitlements and may change due to factors such as employee performance, evolving business needs, or changes to the position.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Hours:

Regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, days and hours may vary due to the needs of the department or the College.
