 Toolroom Machinist

JOB DIMENSIONS:

Job Summary:

With minimal instruction and supervision, designs, builds, or modifies jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Assists other departments in design, and repairs of equipment. Assembles and tries out complex tools and dies and performs other related duties as assigned.

Reports to:

Machine Shop Manager

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Builds or repairs Assembly and Machine Shop tools, jigs, fixtures, and dies, using machining operations and measuring instrument;
• Reads and interprets blueprints, or works from verbal or written instructions, or from the part to be copied or fitted;
• Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of materials, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds;
• Sharpens cutting tools;
• Supports Assembly Departments and embraces process improvement through tooling and automation;
• Brazes carbide to cutting tools;
• Determines specifications for inspection of work using precision measuring and gaging tools, during, and after machining;
• Performs hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies using hand tools of the trade;
• Basic understanding of CNC machine technology for tool making;
• Coordinates with leads, supervisors and other manufacturing resources, and assists with problem solving techniques.;
• Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies.;
• Sets up, and tests jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies to ensure product is to specifications, and adjusts as necessary;
• Assists maintenance department with equipment overhaul by making or repairing parts;
• Manufactures R&D parts for engineering department and provides feedback;
• Regular punctuality, attendance, and absence reporting in conformance with company policies is essential to the successful performance of this position; and
• Fully comply with company rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operations.

  QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination equivalent of, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. May be required to complete an apprenticeship program and/or formal training in area of specialty with at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Must have considerable knowledge and understanding of machining practices and the mechanics involved, and of measuring techniques;
• Ability to produce drawings for machine tooling, test fixtures and assembly jigs;

• Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures;
• Fabricate tooling by setting up and operating manual equipment (Bridgeport, Engine Lathe, Surface Grinder and Cut-off Saws);
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing or verbally with management, supervisors, and co-workers;
• Ability to operate computer to access, edit and maintain company documentation and files, as required for assigned position and/or job at hand; and
• Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical data.

  Physical Requirements: 

• Ability to stand for extended periods of time;
• Ability to bend, reach, stretch, lift, move and carry tools and materials typically weighing 25 lbs. or less;
• Requires a very high degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are required;
• Requires high degree of attention and care to prevent injury to self and others when operating machine tools; and
• Ability to perform essential functions of the job, as defined.
