Supervisor: Highway Commissioner and/or Fleet and Warehouse Superintendent


Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Fleet and Warehouse Superintendent, the Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling automobiles, trucks, machinery, and equipment used within the Highway Department and other areas as needed. This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of all county vehicles and equipment.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including gasoline and diesel engine overhauls, transmission work, brakes, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and small engines (approximately 70% of the time).
  • Support Fleet and Warehouse Superintendent functions, assist as necessary, and assume responsibility for the shop in their absence (10%).
  • Move and transport equipment; assist with picking up parts (5%).
  • Assist with winter plowing, hauling highway materials, and upkeep of buildings, grounds, and equipment (10%).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Commissioner (5%).


Skills and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to repair engines.
  • Proficiency in welding techniques and vehicle repair methods.
  • Knowledge of computer diagnostics and ability to interpret diagrams and charts.
  • Expertise in diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brakes, and engines of all types.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, work independently, and maintain dependability.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 80 pounds and perform repairs requiring bending, twisting, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including emergency call-ins and snow removal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools, construction and maintenance equipment, motorized vehicles, and personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED, plus 1–2 years of technical or trade school. Air Brake and A/C certifications required.


Experience: 3–5 years of experience working with heavy trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 80 pounds. Good vision and hearing required for diagnostics and safety.

Environmental Demands: Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions, with exposure to noise, vibration, electrical hazards, chemicals, fumes, and dust.


Schedule

This position offers a 4-day workweek with 10-hour shifts (40 hours total), providing flexibility and work-life balance while accommodating snow removal and emergency call-ins as needed.
