Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building homes, communities, and hope. Our ReStores provide funding for this mission by selling donated home improvement items, furniture, and more. Every role within our organization supports this critical work, helping families achieve affordable housing.
Position Summary:
We’re seeking a reliable and motivated Donations Pick-Up Truck Driver Helper to assist in collecting donations from our generous community supporters. As the Driver Helper, you’ll partner with the driver to load, unload, and transport donated items safely and efficiently. This role is essential to ensuring donations reach our ReStores and contribute to our mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Donations Pick-Up Truck Driver in navigating to scheduled donation pick-up locations.
- Load and unload donations, ensuring safe handling and proper care of items.
- Interact with donors courteously, providing excellent customer service and representing Habitat’s values.
- Secure donations in the truck to prevent damage during transit.
- Help maintain a clean and organized truck for safe and efficient operations.
- Collaborate with the ReStore team to process donations upon arrival.
Schedule:
- General work hours are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday
- Occasional evening and weekend hours required
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy items (up to 50 lbs or more) regularly.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills for assisting the driver and interacting with donors.
- A positive attitude and a commitment to Habitat for Humanity’s mission and values.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and tasks as needed.
- Previous experience in a warehouse, moving, or logistics role is a plus but not required.

Many residents of Greater Des Moines struggle daily with the lack of decent and affordable housing. More than 10,000 low-income families in our community are stuck in cost-burden rental situations they cannot afford. In neighborhoods with Habitat’s focus, more than one out of four homes are in need of repair to preserve the home or keep it at a basic level of safety. In Polk County, thousands of working families do not earn enough to qualify for a traditional mortgage. The average monthly payment for very low-income families would consume half of their monthly income. Rent is no better, the average monthly payment is a cost burden for 75% of this population.
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, GDM Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homebuyer families.
