Description

Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position (40 hours / 5 days per week). The Science Center is open daily for staff, Monday through Sunday. Typical work hours for Facilities & Security staff members fall between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. This role may work early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and overnights based on operational needs. Efforts are made to maintain a consistent schedule and advanced notice of any changes.

Summary:

Be a part of the team that keeps the iconic Science Center building and Steamship William G. Mather in guest-ready condition! The Facilities Maintenance Technician ensures that Great Lakes Science Center, including the Steamship William G. Mather, is safe, functional, and well-maintained for all guests, staff, and partners. This role performs general maintenance, basic repairs, provides operational and event support and supports the overall safety and security of the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintenance & Repair

· Execute a wide range of general building maintenance tasks, including light carpentry, drywall repair, painting, and basic plumbing.

· Perform basic electrical repairs, such as replacing switches and receptacles, while adhering strictly to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety procedures.

· Conduct routine mechanical maintenance on facility systems, including changing HVAC filters and cleaning pump strainers.

· Follow and document preventive maintenance schedules for various facility systems.

Operational & Event Support

· Complete setup and breakdown of furniture and equipment for special events and internal meetings, including tables, chairs, tents, and other fixtures, both indoors and outdoors.

· Perform opening and closing procedures for the Science Center and Steamship William G. Mather facilities

· Assist with shipping and receiving operations, including the distribution and storage of delivered goods.

· Maintain the cleanliness and organization of key operational areas, including the receiving dock, mechanical spaces, and emergency stairwells.

Safety & Security

· Respond to first aid calls, emergency situations, and building evacuations as required.

· Operate and monitor life safety systems, including the building's fire panel.

· Complete detailed and accurate security and incident reports as necessary.

· Maintain accountability for assigned security keys, a two-way radio, and the department duty phone.

· Ensure all duties are performed in a manner that prioritizes the safety of guests, colleagues, and property.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Please note that this position requires occasionally working outdoors for prolonged periods in varied weather conditions, climbing narrow stairwells and ladders, and lifting heavy objects. This position requires extended periods of standing, stooping, and reaching to maintain and inspect equipment. This position works in environments with excessive noise requiring ear protection and occasional respiratory protection. Candidate must be able to work closely and effectively with guests, vendors, contractors, and Science Center staff, all while being friendly and outgoing. Professional attitude and appearance are required. This position will comply with all Great Lakes Science Center policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for colleagues and guests.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, write, and type. The employee frequently is required to stand on post; walk/respond in a professional manner to emergency calls, use hands to handle, and reach with hands and arms. This job works inside and outside, year-round. Due to the historic nature of the Steamship, air conditioning is not available, and this role may experience warm temperatures during the spring/summer operating season. This position requires the ability to lift items needed for maintenance and special events, up to 50 pounds; and be able to push or pull minimum of 200 pounds.

The Facilities & Security department is team orientated. The Facilities Maintenance Technician should be self-motivated, be able to work independently, and be able to multitask.

This role may work early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and overnights. Due to the operations of the department and organization, staff may be required to work during holidays and flex their schedules when needed for the organization. Due to the operations of the building, the schedule may be adjusted as late as a week prior to the scheduled work date for this department.

Requirements

Education and Work Experience Qualifications:

· Graduation from a vocational school in related field preferred.

· At least one year of previous industrial, commercial, or residential maintenance experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications (K/S/A):

· Must be able to operate a computer to check emails, open and read itineraries and floor plans, and operate building preventative maintenance and work order platform

· Must be able to complete Word documents and electronic incident reports

· Practical skill and knowledge in such areas as carpentry, plumbing, welding, and using various power and hand tools associated with such.

· Flexibility to work weekends, late evenings, and early mornings a must. Work hours and schedule are determined by the hours, event scheduling, and peak visitation periods of Great Lakes Science Center.

· Willing to receive 3000 lbs. tow motor certification and vertical lift system and operate equipment
