Role Responsibilities

The Vital Statistics unit is responsible for registration and maintenance of vital events for the Province of Alberta, including births, adoptions, surrogacies, death, stillbirths, marriages and legal change of name, as well as, partnering with other Canadian jurisdictions and the federal government to share vital statistics information. The unit provides expertise and direction to internal and external stakeholders as well as the public.

You will be reporting to the Vital Statistics Supervisor and will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of a Vital Statistics Specialist.

Your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Daily reconciliation of vital event data transfer to federal partners (Service Canada, Statistics Canada and Canada Revenue Agency).
  • Understanding the web services functionality and identify when system issues may be occurring.
  • Liaising with third-party service providers regarding system issues and enhancement proposals.
  • Working with and coaching registry agents, funeral directors, hospital administrators, medical examiner offices and marriage officiants using the Vital Statistics System (VISTAS).
  • Providing information and guidance on general inquiries, products and services.
  • Working with third party vendors to process vital events and fulfill service requests, along with maintaining and building relationship with internal and external stakeholder.
  • Participating in regular cross training initiatives to maximize knowledge of all vital events and ensure adequate coverage for business area.
  • Providing team support in high volume periods to ensure timely service delivery to Albertans.
  • Providing guidance and direction to stakeholders in relation to vital event registrations.
  • Identifying areas requiring policy review and modernization.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalencies:

  • One-year related certificate and three years related experience.
  • A two-year diploma and two years of related experience.
  • Four years directly related experience.
  • Experience working with the VISTAS database is required.

The following will be considered as an Asset:

  • Experience working in a Tier 2 call center environment.
  • Experience working at a Registry Agent  Office
  • Experience handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite: Outlook (answering stakeholder inquiries and completing registration documentation), Word (formatting and editing).

Hours of Work: Monday – Friday (8:15 am-4:30 pm).

Location: John E. Brownlee Building, 10365 97th Street, Edmonton, AB.
