The Strategy, Support & Integrated Initiatives (SSII) division provides strategic and integrated support for PSES divisional services and ministerial priority initiatives. The Strategic Policy and Planning branch provides rigorous, high-quality data, research, and evaluation services to support evidence-based decision making within the public safety system. The work of the branch significantly contributes to the Government of Alberta's commitment to public accountability and transparency.

As the Senior Research and Evaluation Analyst, you’ll be a go to expert within the Ministry—helping uncover what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to happen next across Alberta’s criminal, family, and civil justice systems. Your work will directly support Ministry priorities, new initiatives, and ongoing operations by developing thoughtful, rigorous evaluation frameworks and translating evidence into meaningful action.

You’ll collaborate with divisions across the department, guide research projects from idea to implementation, and help ensure decisions are grounded in high-quality data and analysis.

What You’ll Do
You’ll bring curiosity, rigor, and leadership to a wide range of research and evaluation activities, including:

  1. Anticipating emerging trends and identifying research that matters to the Ministry’s strategic direction.
  2. Providing expert consultation on research design, evaluation approaches, and evidence-based decision-making.
  3. Applying project management best practices to keep research and evaluation initiatives on track and well-documented.
  4. Conducting detailed studies that help stakeholders understand system impacts, opportunities, and outcomes.
  5. Leading knowledge translation, turning complex findings into accessible frameworks, tools, resources, and reports.
  6. Representing the Ministry on research and evaluation committees and working groups as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • University graduation in Social Sciences,
  • PLUS a minimum of 4 years of progressively related experience.
  • Equivalencies will be considered on a one year-for-one year basis.

Assets:

  • Advanced knowledge of social science research methodology and applied research design including ethical guidelines, data availability and data collection.
  • Understanding of how the criminal justice system is structured and operates.
  • Strong understanding of evaluation principles and processes, including formative, summative, and developmental evaluation methodologies, evaluation frameworks, logic models, and theories of change, social return on investment.
  • Experience with project management skills and ability to manage multiple large scale projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with data management and visualization software such as SAS, SPSS, NVivo, as well as survey platforms.

  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm)
