As Director of Environmental Regulation, you'll guide high-impact programs, shape regulatory policy, and influence how we protect Alberta’s land, wildlife, and critical infrastructure. In this pivotal role, you will provide strategic leadership in environmental regulation, guiding the development of policies, standards, and practices that support the planning, design, and delivery of highway, bridge, and water infrastructure projects. You’ll lead the integration of environmental compliance with operational goals, balancing innovation with risk management. This role also directs key programs—including road closures, aggregates, remediation, and Alberta Wildlife Watch—positioning you at the intersection of environmental stewardship and infrastructure excellence.

Responsibilities Include: 

• Developing and implementing environmental standards, guidelines, and best practices for infrastructure projects.
• Providing expert regulatory guidance that balances compliance, cost, and risk.
• Mentoring staff and building department-wide capacity in environmental awareness and performance.
• Leading the department’s environmental remediation and liability management efforts, including the prioritization and allocation of funding.
• Overseeing road closures and aggregate policies, ensuring alignment with legislation and operational priorities.
• Managing the Alberta Wildlife Watch program, including mitigation funding allocation and strategic direction for animal-vehicle collision reduction.
• Overseeing the environmental auditing of department work to monitor and improve performance.
• Collaborating with regulatory agencies, consultants, contractors, and other ministries to align on environmental approaches and resolve complex issues.

Qualifications

Required:

• A related university degree (e.g., Sciences), supplemented by at least seven (7) years of progressively related experience. Equivalencies may be considered. 
• A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent.
• In-depth knowledge of provincial and federal environmental regulatory requirements.
• In-depth knowledge of the department’s Environmental Management System and other related standards, specifications, guidelines and requirements.

The successful candidate MUST also have:

• Ten years of experience leading environmental assessments and/or evaluations for infrastructure projects across planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance phases.
• Working knowledge of fisheries, wildlife, contaminated sites, soils, historical resources, and rare species within an Alberta regulatory context.
• Experience leading teams of highly skilled professionals, including mentoring and training.
• Broader experience navigating multi stakeholder regulatory environments.

Assets: 

• Understanding of road closure processes.
• Understanding of the Alberta Wildlife Watch Program.
• Experience in responding to inquiries from the Office of the Auditor General.
• Experience in aggregate management policies within the TEC framework.
• Additional certifications or training related to environmental management, impact assessment, or regulatory compliance.
• Experience working directly with provincial or municipal agencies in Alberta.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

For Example: 

• Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 10 years of experience; or
• Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 9 years of experience; or
• Related minimum 11 years of experience.

Additional Position Details:

• Term of Employment: Permanent Full-time position 
• Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm)
• Location: Twin Atria Building, 4999 98 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6B 2X3
• Traveling may consist of up to 10% of the work schedule
