About this role

Job Summary

The Director, Supply Chain is responsible for planning, managing, and optimizing the supply chain for Commercial Services Operations.  This role oversees and coordinates the sales and operations planning process, including supply/demand forecasting, inventory management, and on-time delivery.  Oversees and coordinates supply chain steps and processes to ensure efficiencies and effectiveness related to procurement, operations, and production.  Demonstrates a continuous improvement approach to process improvement, integration, and post-analytics with ultimate accountability for standardized work at the site.  Identifies and documents opportunities to improve systems efficiencies, reduce costs, or otherwise streamline existing programs and processes.  The Director leads, manages, and coaches the supply chain team and works closely with all members of management to ensure ongoing compliance and customer service.  The Director, Supply Chain contributes as a key member of the management team, which consists of the Vice President, Senior Director, Manufacturing Operations, Director, Plant Operations, Manufacturing Engineer, and Director, Quality.  Works closely with senior leaders in Commercial Services to determine operational efficiency, cost controls, and pricing strategies.  Additionally, partners with other areas of Goodwill including Technology, Accounting, and Purchasing.

Example Duties and Activities 

Accountability and Improvement

  • The Director, Supply Chain plans and delivers the successful strategy to the manufacturing team.

  • The Supply Director ensures, on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, that the top-line revenue plan remains intact, while also monitoring expenses for the supply chain team.

  • Manages activities related to strategic or tactical purchasing, material requirements planning, inventory control, warehousing, or receiving.

  • Ensures material and component supply based on schedules and inventory reports.  Works with production management to ensure on-time complete metrics are met for each customer. 

  • Creates tools to evaluate operations, investigate cost variances, and propose recommendations to improve operations and financial results.  Uses technology such as Microsoft Dynamics, Excel, Power BI, and other tools to create dashboards and tools for the operations team. 

  • Trains and communicates financial results/analysis to the operations team. 

  • Analyzes inventories to determine how to increase inventory turns, reduce waste, or optimize customer service.  Manages customer-owned inventory to ensure accuracy and reporting transparency.  Reviews inventory and operating reports to evaluate results and resolve problems.

  • Creates communication systems for customers to ensure service and delivery requirements are met.  Creates ways to improve customer’s expectations through communication and feedback.

  • Implements production processes and measures for new customers.

  • Coordinates manufacturing activities and establishes priorities by preparing production schedules to ensure effective and efficient labor utilization to meet customers’ expectations.

  • Communicates schedules to the plant management team and customers as appropriate.  Maintains awareness through communication with group leaders of the status of schedules and takes direct action when needed to resolve and/or prevent any delays.

  • Creates and maintains work instructions in accordance with controlled copy standards and documents all processes.

  • Communicates with all customers and stakeholders on order and production status.

  • Develops and implements new methods for tracking, managing, and monitoring customer service and production scheduling.

  • Manages systems that support manufacturing orders, shipping, invoicing, and production.

  • Maintains accurate production/purchasing records for conformity.

  • Assures compliance of employees to all state and federal regulations.

Financial/Reporting/Vendor Management

  • Provides financial and accounting analysis for the Commercial Services Operations including contract packaging, manufacturing, and building services.  Creates cost reports, profitability analysis, variance tracking, and cost modeling for various operations. 

  • Controls product costs by researching and sourcing vendors, developing strong working relationships, and effectively negotiating pricing.  Develops and maintains approved vendor listing, monitoring supplier performance.

  • Negotiates prices and terms with suppliers, vendors, or freight forwarders.

  • Leads financial analysis for new customers, expansion, contract addition, and related operations.

  • Provides monthly/annual reporting for GWCS - subcontracting reports/analysis, etc

  • Develops, creates, and leads customer profitability analysis for Commercial Services.

Employee Development/Management

  • Performs informal and formal performance reviews, offering praise for good performance and providing improvement goals and corrective actions for substandard performance through coaching, counseling, and individual continual feedback. Motivates team members to gain and maintain their dedication to meeting individual and departmental objectives.  Addresses complaints and resolves problems.

  • Participates in the interviewing and hiring process.  Ensures appropriate onboarding and training of staff.

Support/Special Projects 

  • Assists with third-party audits, including ISO quality and source inspections.

  • Contributes to special projects and continuous improvement projects.

  • Participates in the Management Review Team.

Required Competencies

  • Industry Expertise -  Possesses familiarity with warehousing and inventory controls, lean manufacturing systems, quality management systems, and LEAN philosophies as they apply to a plant manufacturing environment.  Has worked with LEAN tools and systems or other continuous improvement processes.  Knowledgeable of ISO 9001 is a plus. 

  • Operations and People Management - Provides direction and resources to the operations team to guide production activities ideally in warehousing, retail, logistics, customer service, merchandising, process planning/improving, or a related service-oriented industry.  Directs and trains supervisory and management staff to ensure the success of personnel and division objectives.  Fosters a strong team atmosphere that embraces and appreciates diversity.  Possesses effective budget accountability skills.

  • Procurement and Negotiation - Uses a value-driven, quality-based purchasing and negotiation process to establish fair pricing and payment terms, delivery terms, quality standards, etc. Adept at identifying appropriate suppliers and establishing and maintaining effective relationships with vendor partners.

  • Building Collaborative Relationships - Develops, maintains, and strengthens partnerships at all levels with others inside or outside the organization who can provide information, assistance, and support. Is able to receive as well as provide feedback to improve performance or processes; builds and maintains customer satisfaction.

  • Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend customers' needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world.

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving - Uses both rationale and reasoning to examine data, processes, and strategies in identifying trends and inconsistencies to create alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.  Implements innovative solutions to address complex issues.

  • Technical Knowledge - Has strong working knowledge of G Suite and MS Office.  Prior experience with MRPs and ERPs.  Microsoft D365 is preferred.

  • Autonomy - Takes initiative without waiting to be directed, exhibits a willingness to take on additional tasks, and completes them as requested and until the job is done. Takes ownership of mistakes and learns from them rather than makes excuses.
