About The Role:

The Voice Architect will own the architecture and technical strategy for all enterprise voice and unified communication systems. This includes our VoIP telephony infrastructure, Microsoft Teams Voice integration, SIP trunking, voicemail, and other unified communications (UC) platforms. In this role, you will ensure our voice services are robust, scalable, and well-integrated with both on-premises and cloud environments. You’ll collaborate with outsourcer voice specialists and ops teams to design and implement voice solutions that align with our business needs. As the subject matter expert in enterprise voice, you will represent our technical interests when working with the outsourcer on voice projects, making sure the solutions meet our quality, security, and reliability standards. Deep technical expertise in voice architecture (e.g., POTS-in-a-Box, PBX/VoIP systems, SIP) is required, along with experience integrating voice systems with cloud platforms like Azure or M365.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Voice Architecture & Design
    • Design and maintain scalable enterprise voice systems including IP‑PBX, VoIP, SIP trunking, dial plans, consistent numbering schemes and call flows.
    • Ensure architecture supports growth while delivering high call quality and resiliency.
  • Unified Communications & Cloud Integration
    • Support hybrid architectures combining legacy voice systems with modern UC.
    • Ensure interoperability with on‑prem PBXs, SBCs, gateways, SIP trunks, cloud services.
    • Integrate voice platforms with UC systems, including Microsoft Teams Voice via Direct Routing or Operator Connect.
  • Subject Matter Expertise & Oversight
    • Serve as SME reviewing outsourcer designs, guiding architecture decisions, and ensuring standards compliance.
    • Provide design parameters (codecs, SIP settings, QoS) and validate accuracy of outsourced implementation
    • Coordinate complex troubleshooting and ensure critical features like IVR, call recording, and E911 meet requirements.
  • Voice Quality & Performance Optimization
    • Monitor MOS, jitter, packet loss, and call logs to diagnose and resolve voice issues.
    • Collaborate with network teams to enforce QoS and optimize routing for voice quality.
    • Analyze logs and user reports to tune codecs, adjust configurations, and resolve issues.

 

About You: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 8+ years of experience in voice over IP (VoIP) and telephony systems engineering, with progressively increasing responsibility with CCNP-level knowledge.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field is preferred (or equivalent work experience). 
  • Microsoft certifications, demonstrating validated knowledge in cloud services, a plus.
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in enterprise voice technologies, including SIP trunking, SBC configuration (AudioCodes, Cisco CUBE), VoIP PBX systems, such as Cisco CUCM, and legacy protocols like H.323, MGCP, and TDM integration.
  • Understand Microsoft Teams Voice architecture—including Direct Routing, Call Queues, and Auto Attendants—and how it connects to the PSTN through SBCs or Calling Plans.
  • Ensure voice solutions meet security and regulatory requirements by implementing encrypted signaling/media (SIP TLS, SRTP) and maintaining compliance with standards such as E911 and call‑recording laws.
  • Possess strong knowledge of voice‑related networking and QoS requirements, ensuring prioritized voice traffic across LAN/WLAN/SD‑WAN and collaborating with network teams to resolve latency, bandwidth, and firewall/NAT issues that impact call quality.
  • Develop roadmaps and scalable designs supporting growth and lifecycle management.
  • Maintain diagrams, inventories, IP schemas, and failover documentation with accurate updates.
  • Document voice architecture, SIP trunks, dial plans, routing, and major system configs.
  • Define and enforce standards, templates, and naming conventions across all deployments.
  • Develop runbooks and training to strengthen team capability on advanced topics
  • Support teams and mentor staff on architecture, troubleshooting, and best practices.
